“Rock Creek Property Group broke ground today on the restoration of the historic Takoma Theatre. Located at 6833 4th Street, NW, the theater is in the Takoma neighborhood of DC, just two blocks from the Red Line’s Takoma Metro station, a five-minute drive to Silver Spring, a seven-minute drive to the Beltway, and a 20-minute drive to downtown Washington.

Architect John Jacob Zink designed the theater in the 1920s. Zink would go on to design more than 200 theaters around the country, including the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street, NE, the Uptown Theater in Cleveland Park, and the Senator Theatre in Baltimore. The Takoma Theatre was one of the first theaters in the area to feature “talkies,” when a sound system was installed in 1929. Throughout its time as an active theater, the Takoma Theatre featured a wide array of performances, including an HBO comedy special by Chris Rock in 1996. (more…)

28 Year Old Arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder of Man in Takoma

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced an arrest has been made in reference to a fatal shooting that occurred in the 200 block of Cedar Street, Northwest on Monday, December 26, 2016.

At approximately 7:46 pm, members of the Fourth District received a call for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 37 year-old James Dorsey, Jr., of No Fixed Address.

On Saturday, December 31, 2016, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 28 year-old Shawn James Brown, of Northwest, DC. He was charged with Second-Degree Murder While Armed.”

Shooting Homicide in Takoma Just before 8pm Monday

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating two persons of interest in a fatal shooting which occurred on Monday, December 26, 2016, in the 200 block of Cedar Street, Northwest.

At approximately 7:46 pm, members of the Fourth District received a call for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 37-year-old James Dorsey Jr., of no fixed address.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

“At approximately 1950 hours, Fourth District units responded to 218 Cedar Street, NW in reference to a shooting. Units discovered an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his body. Northern Ward 4 Dog Park Group resubmitted a new site application to DPR adjacent to Takoma Aquatic Center building

“This letter, along with the attached documentation, is being submitted by The Northern Ward 4 Dog Park Group (the “Group”) as the Group’s dog park application resubmission. The Group previously submitted an application to DPR for a dog park on District-owned parkland at 3rd and Underwood St., NW on December 10, 2015. That application was subsequently denied by DPR via a rejection letter on October 10, 2016. The Group has since identified a new, preferred site that we believe meets the needs of District dog owners and the community at large, while satisfying both the existing criteria outlined in the D.C. Municipal Regulations (DCMR) and the criteria that the Director of DPR outlined in the recent dog park rejection letter. This new site is located on a triangular parcel of land that is adjacent to the Frank R. Williams Building and the Takoma Aquatic Center building (Appendix A). While this site has approximately .60 acres of land available, the Group would like to request that DPR approve the site for a fenced-in off-leash dog exercise area that is .30 acres in size.

The following reasons support the Group’s rationale for selecting this new site:

“Trattoria da Lina is a new Italian restaurant coming to Takoma Park in early 2017. The project will take over a former office space and add another option to Takoma Park’s growing dining scene.

Construction is well underway for this 55 seat restaurant in the heart of the Takoma Park commercial district. The restaurant’s design is rustic and cozy with brick and wood and inspired by the casual eateries of the owner’s motherland.The menu will offer a wide variety of pasta dishes, including traditional favorites and authentic creations, plus steak and fish options too. The restaurant will host a full bar.

The owner is Marcello Minna, area restaurateur with 20 years experience and partner in Magico, the group behind Takoma Park’s popular Dolci Gelati Cafe. Minna plans to staff the Trattoria with a team from Italy.”

A resident reported on the MPD 4D Listserv:

“…2nd night in a row a group of 8 to 10 teens mugged and robbed someone in the 6800 block of 4th street. Tonight they 1st harassed a biker, who managed to get away from them and then beat and robbed a neighbor who was walking home from the Rec. center. They took cell phones, a laptop, clothes, and wallet and ran toward the metro. It is very unsettling because neighbors were on their porches and motion sensor lights in my yard came on but this did not deter the muggers. Both nights it happened around 7:30. Police responded quickly.”

MPD responded:

“Lieutenant Ennis (PSA 401) has put together a plan of action to combat the crime in the Takoma Park Area. This plan is designed to prevent the rash of robberies in the area with the goal to arrest those individuals responsible. We have adjusted our deployment to ensure that officers are in this area, to prevent any criminal activity. Please if you see a large crowd gathering or if you suspect criminal activity please call 911. Remember if you see something say something.”

“Takoma Beverage Company is coming to 6917 Laurel Ave, Takoma Park in the heart of the Takoma commercial district. Takoma Beverage Company will be a neighborhood cafe, specializing in hand-crafted coffee and tea, along with beer, wine and cocktails, all prepared by trained baristas. Seth Cook, co-owner and the current coffee director of award winning Northside Social in Arlington, VA, will oversee the coffee program.

Takoma Beverage Company will also offer a selection of breakfast sandwiches and pastries to accompany morning coffee and tea service. In the afternoon, customers will be invited to transition to beer, wine and cocktails with more elegant fare, from charcuterie and cheese to smaller composed dishes, all prepared in-house.

The new space will host a long bar and and open kitchen. There will be 30 seats plus outdoor patio seating looking onto the tree-lined street, which also hosts Takoma Park’s popular Takoma Park Farmers Market. Takoma Beverage Co. is under construction now and will open late 2016/early 2017. Hours of operation will be 7:00am-10:00pm Sunday-Thursday and 7:00am-12:00am Friday and Saturday.”
