tenac_provacative_sign

“Dear PoPville,

This sign is hanging at a well trafficked bus stop right in front of the Potomac Ave metro on Pennsylvania Ave, SE. Whether or not you agree with the message, I find the group that posted it interesting. From what I know, TENAC typically & primarily deals with tenants rights in DC; this seems to be a departure from their stated message/purpose. The statement at the bottom, “representing all DC tenants,” certainly gives the impression of much weight behind the sentiment.

I haven’t been a renter for quite a few years & find myself wondering if this group really does have the support & voice of tenants? Is TENAC changing its focus?”

Their mission statement says:

TENAC is a non-profit, public service organization dedicated exclusively to tenant interests, tenant rights, and support for rent control in the District of Columbia. We are the only city-wide tenants organization, and we represent all tenants in the District of Columbia.

As a legal successor to the Tenants’ Organizations Political Action Committee (TOPAC), we have been serving tenants for almost 15 years. TENAC’s mission is to assist tenants through education, legal information, and lobbying for tenant legislation- especially affordable housing and tenants’ rights. TENAC prepares legislative proposals on behalf of tenants, and testifies frequently before the City Council on matters of vital interest to tenants. Of critical importance is TENAC’s HOTLINE (202-628-3688), which answers landlord/tenant questions, and TENAC’s role in helping tenants to form tenant associations throughout the city. TENAC believes that tenants in unorganized rental buildings are open for abuse by landlords, rental agents, and owners. We will not rest until we see a tenants’ association in every rental building in the city.

The sign, if it is indeed TENAC approved, is certainly an interesting departure from that mission…

“Dear PoPville,

I live on 16th street SE, between east capitol and A SE. Last night my father in law went to get some milk at the Cupboard around 5pm.

Apparently as he walked on East Capitol he passed a group of teenage high schoolers (presumably from Eastern High School). One came up behind him and hit him on the head with a metal pole. [He is doing ok. Just needed stitches. He is very lucky that he was hit where he was, a couple inches over he may not be here with us.] The kid ran off and the others laughed and then dispersed as he made it back to our home afraid they would continue to attack him.

We had the police respond and they were unable to find anything at this point. I have often felt uncomfortable and harassed by high school age children in this area and now they are actually attacking people for fun.

There was no attempt to take any of his possessions, so this is just a depraved act similar to the knockout games.”

hill_east_car_jacking

A reader sends the following alert from MPD:

“Please be aware of this suspicious activity event that occurred today. [Ed. Note: Yesterday]

This morning at about 11:15 AM, a female victim was operating her vehicle in the 1100 block of I Street SE and stopped at a traffic light, where another vehicle struck her car from behind. When the victim of the struck vehicle exited her car to inspect the damage she turned her vehicle off, took her keys with her and locked the doors. She spoke with the operator of the striking vehicle, who moments later left the scene without making his identity know to the victim. A observant citizen was able to report that while the victim was speaking with the operator, another subject exited a second car and walked up to the passenger side of the victim’s car and tried to open the door. After he was not able to gain entry to the vehicle, he returned to the second car and both suspect vehicles drove off.

The lookout for the striking vehicle is for a dark color Acura with MD paper tags. The description of the second vehicle is a dark gray Acura with unknown tags.

While we cannot be certain of the intentions of this second person, the actions of this event are similar to previously reported carjacking events. If that was their intention, the crime was thwarted because the potential victim followed the advise that we have given to the public: if you are involved in an accident and get out of your car to inspect the damage and speak with the other driver- first turn you car off, take the keys out of the ignition and lock your doors when you exit. If you feel uncomfortable, please call 911 and an officer will respond t assist you with the exchange of information.

The Hit & Run will be investigated by the First District H&R Coordinator; however, the incident will also be investigated by the First District Detectives Unit who are coordinating the investigation of several similiar incidents.”

From a press release:

“Councilmember Tommy Wells praised the selection of Donatelli Development and Blue Skye Construction for the Phase 1 redevelopment of Reservation 13. The Hill East project will consist of the construction of two mixed-use buildings focused on parcels F-1 and G-1 to the east of the Stadium-Armory Metro Station.

“The development for Hill East has been long delayed. With nearby access to public transit and bordered by the Anacostia River, this is a great opportunity to bring new amenities to the community, as well as the city. It is an important step toward creating the mixed-use development our city needs.

“The city will now enter into negotiations with the development team, and there is a lot of community-led work that still remains. I am particularly interested in adding affordable housing to the neighborhood to maintain the diversity that makes our city great. I look forward to the next phase of this development and to working with neighbors to honor the community’s vision.”
