From a press release:

Union Market, the highly acclaimed food market redeveloped by EDENS, one of the nation’s leading retail real estate owners and developers, announced today that FRESHFARM Markets will open a producer-only farmers market on July 21, 2013. This additional FRESHFARM Markets’ location will be open every Sunday from July 21 – October 27, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The FRESHFARM Market at Union Market will be located outside of Union Market on Neal Place, with over ten local farmers and artisanal producers providing fresh produce and other local goods.

FRESHFARM Markets operates 11 producer-only farmers markets that provide vital economic opportunities for local farmers and artisanal producers, and innovative outreach programs that educate the public about food and related environmental issues. These farmers markets include more than 150 farmers and producers from five states who farm more than 10,000 acres. The markets attract over 380,000 shoppers annually in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

In order to lower economic barriers to fresh local foods, FRESHFARM Markets accepts SNAP (Food Stamps/EBT) and other nutritional benefits and matches what SNAP shoppers spend with free Matching Dollars. The organization gave away $47,000 to low income shoppers in 2012.

“FRESHFARM Markets created our first Northeast DC FRESHFARM Market on H Street, NE in 2004 and we look forward to adding this new market to bring more fresh, healthy food and our SNAP and Matching Dollars program to the community,” says Bernadine Prince, Co-Executive Director of FRESHFARM Markets.

To celebrate the opening of the market Red Hen Owner/Chef Mike Friedman will be doing a Chef-at-Market cooking demonstration from 11:00 a.m. to 12noon.

polaroid_foto_bar_union_station

Thanks to a reader for sending word about a Polaroid Fotobar coming to Union Station:

UNION STATION – Washington D.C.
OPENING – JULY 2013

The reader writes it’ll be located in “the space will be at the end of Union Station by the McDonalds (obviously, from the reflections in the pic!)”

Engadget explains that it is:

where you can go and have your digital photos professionally printed…each staffed with so-called Photenders to help you get the best results, and equipped with a “patent-pending proprietary technology” that’ll let you wirelessly transfer photos from your phone to a workstation. What’s more, the stores won’t just be producing glossy photos, but what Polaroid describes as handcrafted pieces using canvas, metal, acrylic, wood or bamboo — those will be shipped to the customer within 72 hours.

Sounds cool.
