Snallygaster Beer Festival at Union Market this Year Sat. Oct. 19th “will tap 200 unique beers”

“In exactly one month, the team behind acclaimed beer destinations such as Birch & Barley, ChurchKey, Rustico and Bluejacket will host their second annual craft beer festival, Snallygaster. Named for the fearsome and mythical dragon-like beast said to terrorize the region at the turn of the century, this year’s festival will feature an even more expansive and stylistically far-reaching list of no less than 200 artisanal craft beers all handpicked by famed Beer Director Greg Engert. This year, Snallygaster is going to be held at Union Market (located at 1309 5th Street NE) on Saturday, October 19 from 1 to 6 PM. It is an event to benefit Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture.

This year, Snallygaster will tap 200 unique beers on the grounds of Union Market. Beer director Greg Engert has been busy sourcing an unbelievable array of craft ales and lagers for the festival all of which will be revealed leading up to the event.

The highlights include:

§ Over 75 different seasonal selections like Oktoberfests, Pumpkin Ales and Fresh-Hop Harvest brews
§ 16 singular rubber-clad gravity kegs sourced from Franconia, Germany; the largest one-time collection ever assembled for our region
§ 6 distinct wood-clad gravity kegs serving German & Austrian specialties, including one five-foot tall 90-liter wood-clad gravity keg making its regional debut
§ No fewer than 10 authentic cask ales, featuring classic selections, as well as, cask debuts from both established and new British & American producers
§ An ever-growing list of crazy scarce drafts from across the USA and beyond
§ The DC debut of rare brews from a number of new local brewers

Shake Shack Coming to Union Station in Mid-2014

Prominently located in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood, Shake Shack Union Station will be in the original West Hall of the restored and revitalized landmark building, which dates back to 1907.”

Shake Shack currently has locations at 9th and F St, NW in the Spy Museum and at 1216 Connecticut Ave, NW.

Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair Returning to Union Market Sept. 28th and 29th – Entry Fee of $5 in advance or $10 at the Door

Last year Crafty Bastard moved to Union Market after 7 years in Adams Morgan. They’re returning to Union Market this year on Sept 28th and 29th.

From a press release:

“We’re thrilled to announce that this year, in addition to the more than 140 talented vendors who will be featured, attendees can enjoy local food truck fare, a selection of craft brews at the New Belgium Beer Garden, and attractions for every age at the Crafty Clubhouse Tent (stroller parking included)!

This year’s carefully-selected roster of independent artisans will be selling everything from clothing, jewelry and home goods to fine art and toys. There’s a one-of-a-kind find for everyone at Crafty Bastards – and this unique shopping experience is here for two days only!

More Union Market News – Seafood Market and Cafe, District Fishwife, and new “chef driven” Restaurant Coming Soon

Earlier in the week we learned that RIS would be opening a stall in mid-November and it:

“will feature a larder of staples for any chef or home cook: stocks, sauces, soups, prepared foods and baked goods, along with daily offerings of “Ris Bowls” – hot stews, creative salads and nutritious children’s foods.”

The Washington Post also reports that and a new seafood market and cafe called the District Fishwife will be opening in November:

“the District Fishwife, a 440-square-foot seafood market and cafe that will deal in sustainable fish. Lewis is expected to sell locally sourced products — rockfish, blue crabs, oysters — while working with distributors and wholesalers to find sustainably caught tuna, wild salmon and sustainably farmed barramundi. She also wants to push small, oily fish.”

And on top of that a liquor license application was recently posted for a new restaurant:

“A chef driven,, farm to table, full service restaurant serving local, fresh and seasonal inspired food. Total Occupancy Load #199, number of Seats #120, Summer Garden seating- joint use in common area. Including Entertainment Endorsement, Live and Recorded music and jazz.”
