Back in early March we checked in on TEL’VEH coming to 401 Massachusetts Ave, NW in Mt. Vernon Square. This is the place that will be a:

“European Café with wine bar. Breakfast and lunch with bakery.”

Since March, serious progress has been made. I stopped in last weekend and snapped a couple of shots. Looks like they’ll be open in a few weeks. The bar looks great (notice the wine dispensers):

And I’m eager to see how the main dining room turns out:

Back in early March I mentioned that the former Lamont Bishop Gallery space was for lease at 1314 9th St, NW in front of Sundevich and next to Seasonal Pantry. Great development on that front – the owners of Seasonal Pantry and Sundevich have leased the space. That can only mean one thing – something awesome is coming to 1314 9th St, NW. Stay tuned for details as they become available.

Update from Landlord 12:30pm:

“We at 1314 1/2 Inc. are thrilled to announce that Dan O’Brien of Seasonal Pantry is expanding his space and mind into the former Lamont Bishop Gallery space at 1314 9th St NW. Stay tuned to see what this creative, hard-working, and talented chef comes up with. In addition we welcome Sally Hamidi and CityLights Realty Group to our second floor office space.”

A few weeks ago I tweeted that I found a happy hour offering Bell’s Two Hearted Ale for under $3. Unfortunately for me, it is located in Old Town Alexandria (where I don’t get to, too often) at the Union Street Public House. I’m a huge fan of Bell’s brewery beers. I’m also a huge fan of Mandu. My friend Sean send this awesome news – Mandu offers Bell’s Oberon for $3.00 4-7pm everyday. They also have Founders IPA and Oskar Blues Pilsner. While not as awesome as Two Hearted Ale, that’s still a pretty sweet deal. Mandu has two locations at 1805 18th Street, NW and 453 K Street, NW. Awesome.

Dear PoPville,

I’ve been picking up a friend’s dog the last couple of days from Wagtime on 9th Street near the Convention Center. I noticed that the vacant space a couple of doors down was starting to fill up with antique or salvaged furniture. The windows still had the “space available” signs on the windows so it wasn’t clear what was going on. Would you happen to know anything about it?

Unfortunately, I believe this is just a temporary thing. This one is located next to the Longview Gallery on the 1200 block of 9th St, NW. I’ve seen this usage at many vacant retail spaces in Penn Quarter. Basically, it’s a furniture sale for a month or so. Usually the quality of the pieces vary but looking in the window – these seem pretty nice. Ultimately the space gets leased out. I think one of the the ones I saw in Penn Quarter became Pi Pizzeria and the Pannini spot. This one is a huge space so it’ll be interesting to see who ultimately leases the space.

Thanks to everyone who sent emails about the coming soon New York Avenue Beach Bar coming to the 600 block of New York Ave, NW in Mt. Vernon Square. The Going Out Gurus shared the scoop last week:

“In May, Brown [Tom owner of The Passenger] plans to unveil the New York Avenue Beach Bar in what is now an empty parking lot adjacent to the Warehouse Theater, around the corner from the Passenger’s front door. He and his partners are bringing “about 80 tons” of sand to fill the 5,500-square-foot space, along with multiple bars, picnic tables, umbrellas, lounge chairs, food trucks and “luxury trailers” containing bathrooms outfitted with running water.”

I’m cautiously optimistic because it comes from the folks from The Passenger who def. know what they’re doing. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Do you think this is gonna be awesome or awful?

438 Massachusetts Ave, NW

Back in early Feb. 2012 Sixth Engine opened in Mt. Vernon Square at 438 Massachusetts Ave, NW. Their Website says:

“Engine Co. No. 6 is one of the oldest firehouses in the District and the first of Cluss’s nearly 100 buildings to be constructed in D.C. in the late 19th century. It’s one of only 11 still standing. The kind of fires we’re putting out have changed a bit, but the original helmet still hangs above our door.

This eatery is born of the fire in the bellies of five long-serving D.C. restaurateurs and longtime friends. Jeremy Carman, Gavin Coleman, Paul Holder, Paul Madrid, and Tim Walsh are also the names behind Town Hall restaurant and bar in Glover Park and the Dubliner Irish pub in Capitol Hill.”

You can see their menus here. Anyone check them out yet? Any must order items?
