I live in Mt. Pleasant and for the past several months I’ve been watching with amusement, but more recently with alarm, at what is going on in a back yard a few doors down from me. As you can see from the attached photo, the homeowners have constructed a wooden retaining wall 5 or 6 feet high that is (surprise, surprise) already failing. Meanwhile they’ve constructed another one uphill from it, using the same flawed construction method. An architect friend who saw this photo has made some rather dire predictions, saying that catastrophic and potentially life-threatening failure is not just possible but likely. Is it even legal to construct a retaining wall like this without a permit? Am I being a busybody, or should I report them to DCRA immediately (as my friend suggested)?”

“Dear PoPville,
DDOT not only removed the bogus arrowhead from that no-parking sign, they installed a sign below it indicating that parking to the right of the sign is explicitly legal. This has been going on, it is said, for a year. A bit of publicity via PoP did the job, and nearby residents are pleased to have that legal parking space back.
It should be noted (for those commenters who were sure that the tickets were written because of a modest intrusion into that no-parking zone) that the ticket code for parking within 25 feet of a stop sign is P050, but the tickets written for parking at this spot have designated P269, a vague “No Standing Anytime” code that does not correspond to any pertinent DC Municipal Regulation. That is, even the ticket writers couldn’t tell what the actual violation of law was.
Now, can the people who paid $50 fines for parking here get their money back?”

ou would think that this car is legally parked, on the correct side of the signpost indicating no parking (and no standing) between it and the stop sign. I’m sure the driver thought he was doing the right thing. Okay, so it’s extending a bit beyond the signpost, but he’s certainly not obscuring the visibility of the stop sign, which is the purpose of the 25-foot minimum distance requirement (DC Municipal Regulations 18, 2405.2(d)).
Oh, but take a closer look at that sign. Yes, it’s supposed to indicate no parking to its left, and neighbors tell me that’s what it’s been, until lately. Now a new arrow has been crudely added, indicating no parking in both directions.
Talk about a trap for the unwary! Drivers may not notice the added arrowhead, but Parking Enforcement has found it, and is happily inflicting $50 tickets on cars parked on what was the legal side of that signpost. Yes, it’s a stiff $50 fine, because of that “no standing” provision, which suggests that this quiet location — Kilbourne Place, a three-block-long residential street in Mount Pleasant — is a busy arterial, and anyone violating that parking ban is creating a serious safety hazard.
Where did that spurious arrowhead come from? Who put it there? Why does Parking Enforcement accept such an artificially modified sign as legitimate? We have enough parking problems without such costly “gotcha” traps being set.”

I live near 18th Street and Monroe in Mt. Pleasant. In September, someone broke into our English basement apartment through a large window facing the street, which unfortunately we’d accidentally left unlocked. Since then, I’ve noticed that our screen has been moved around, though there has been work done on our house recently so I assumed it was moved by workers. This morning, however, I noticed that someone had opened our window again, but luckily he/she was stopped by a wood block we keep in the window sill. If neighbors have windows without bars that might be easy for people to get into, they should be especially vigilante about making sure their windows are locked. And stay on the lookout- our window is easily visible from the street and these incidents have been happening in broad daylight. I notified the police department, who promised to send extra patrols to the area beginning immediately.”

“For just over a year now, the block of Adams Mill Road between Kenyon and Harvard Streets has been closed, or open for northbound traffic only. This has cut off a popular route for Mount Pleasant residents going to Adams Morgan, or to the National Zoo, or through the Zoo to Beach Drive.
As of 3:20 pm Friday, October 25, the road has been opened to two-way traffic. The final touches on the road project should be completed by mid-November.”

“On October 19, 2013, at approximately 9:15PM the complainant was walking in the 1600 block of Lamont Street, Northwest, when two suspects approached the complainant and stated “Give it up.” Suspect 1 then then punched the complainant in the face and kicked the complainant in the ribs. As the complainant was attempting to get away the suspects attempted to go through the complainant’s pockets. The suspects were unable to obtain any property from the complainant. The suspects fled eastbound in the 1600 block of Lamont Street, Northwest. The complainant suffered minor injuries. Suspect 1 Black male 5’8-5’10, age 20-24. Suspect 2 Black male 5’7-5’8, age 20-24.”
Thanks to a commenter for letting us know yesterday. That Yellow Gym was located at 3220 17th Street, NW just off Park Rd. It is now Fit 360 DC. Their website says:
“A new gym in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood that provides membership, group classes, and personal training. The focus will be on functional, innovative, total body fitness for all levels.”
