    So what’s the story on fireboxes? When were they used? How did they work?

      Before telephones and 2-way radios were readily available to firefighters, these boxes were located throughout the city. In the event of an emergency, policemen (almost all of whom actually walked a beat in those days) and firemen had keys that would open these boxes, and when they activated the switch inside, it sent a signal to a central dispatch office, letting the fire department know where the emergency was.
