11th and P Street, NW

Oof, this one hurts. Thanks to Katie (and all who messaged) for the heads up this morning: “the neighborhood favorite corner spot bar, Commodore Public House and Kitchen, will be closing next week.”

The Commodore opened up in the former Veranda space back in 2016.

From The Commodore:

“To all of our staff, regulars and irregulars,

It is with great sadness that we send this note out to everyone. Unfortunately, we were not able to come to a lease extension agreement with our landlord and we have to hang up the old Diver helmet. (more…)

A reader reported around 6:45pm last night: “This just happened to me at stoneys tonight. They had a vent collapse on me and my GF at the bar. Might be closed a few days!”

Stoney’s tweeted “Sorry for late notice but P Street location will be closed for the rest of the evening. Trivia will be held @StoneysonL for teams who are interested!” (more…)

DoH reports: “there’s a fire on the 1500 block of Vermont NW. Was mainly in the yellow row house but they are going into the white one to check it”

From DCFD: “Box Alarm 1500 block Vermont Ave NW. Smoke showing top floor 3 story row dwelling.”

From AlertDC:

“MPD is reporting the following road closures in addition to the 1500 block of Vermont Street NW: 1200 block P Street NW, Logan Circle & P Street NW, and the 1200 Block of Rhode Island Avenue NW. Please continue to avoid the area.”

“Dear PoPville,

The Logan Circle neighborhood is overridden with delivery trucks many of which do not follow proper street signage. Today a forty-two foot Sysco truck exiting the alley behind Pearl Dive, Rice and Ghibellina blocked traffic for twenty minutes. Fortunately neighbors were able to stop traffic and move legally parked cars in order to clear the street.” (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged. DC Fire & EMS last reported around 11:15:

“Update 2nd Alarm 1500 block Church St NW. #DCsBravest have fire under control. Quick action prevented fire spread to attached buildings on both sides. No injuries reported. Requesting @RedCrossNCR for anticipated displacements. Investigators on scene to determine cause.” (more…)

Thanks to Lam Lam for sending:

“Can DC Parking parking department correct this confusing sign in front of the Darcy Hotel (1515 Rhode Island Ave NW, Washington, DC 20005 ) It’s hard enough finding parking.”

DC311 is on it, so hopefully fixed soon!

Ed. Note: I realize that there have been numerous crime posts these last few days but I can’t pretend what is happening is not happening. I also don’t think we should normalize these events and pretend this is just part of “city living”. These events are horrible and must not be accepted as “normal”. One has every right to be angry and upset that they are happening. One should also recognize that solutions to these deep seated issues are not easy. Simply saying lock them up and throw away the key is not the answer. Doing nothing is not the answer either. If advocating for long term solutions there must also be interim actions to stem the violence that we are seeing. Hopefully there are those who will not pander but will work on genuine solutions that begin to ameliorate what we are seeing far too often.

Thanks to a reader for passing on this awful report from the Washington Blade:

“Three gay men were treated and released from a local hospital following a Halloween night attack on the 1400 block of P Street, N.W., in which an unidentified attacker “used homophobic language” while assaulting the men, according to a police report and a Facebook account of the incident by one of the victims. “Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, November 2nd around 3 PM, my partner was walking along Vermont Avenue NW between Q and R Street’s in Logan Circle. He was returning from Whole Foods with his backpack walking in an area considered safe right off Logan Circle. He was talking on his phone wearing Air Pods, the phone was not visible. One kid (high school aged) came up to him, asked for money which he did not give. He was then surrounded by a number of other kids and chased into the middle of the street where they started kicking him in the face and head. (more…)
