Thanks to a reader for sending word. Originally plans for Holm were listed on the CAS Riegler website:

“A former parking lot, and home of a taxi cab stand and garage, the site has been razed to prepare for the ground-up construction of 38 luxury condominiums and 3,100 square feet of retail.”

But if you click over to the Holm website it now says:

“A collection of 38 new luxury apartments are coming to the vibrant Logan Circle neighborhood. Located just east of the booming 14th street corridor, the residences at HOLM are perfectly situated among all that city life has to offer.”

Remember the awesome old and bit beat up Downtown Lock Co. sign in Logan Circle? 

So like the old “5 years ago” posts I used to do, well, I was going through my photo archives (call it nostalgia if you want but I just love seeing the changes and remembering what it once was.)  All the legwork got me thinking that I could use an intern.    I’m looking for someone who is consistent, curious, and can string a sentence or two together.  Consistent and curious are the most important elements.   I’m not looking for the new Edward R. Murrow.   I’m just looking for someone who loves DC and wouldn’t mind doing some grunt work.  There will be a small stipend and I’m sure you’ll get to go to some cool events too.  Not essential but bonus if you know anything about video editing. Bang & Olufsen
1604 14th Street, NW just north of Q Street

“Dear PoPville,

When I walked by last night, it looked to me like Bank and Olufsen is closing on 14th street. The windows were partially papered over and the space was in disarray from what I could see.”

Sad news for audiophiles. I spoke to the owner who confirmed the closure. Apparently it’s related to this reuters report:

“Danish television and sound system maker Bang & Olufsen would consider any bid approach from a larger rival as it seeks a response to problems that caused a profit warning last month, its chairman said.”

Basically any US independent stores that carried a balance had to pay up immediately or have their dealer license revoked. That is what happened here. For current clients the owner notes:

“we have been in touch with all of our clients who we have open projects with us and they are being completed currently or are being handled by the Tysons Corner store, which is a corporate store. I don’t want to give the appearance that we are disappearing and abandoning our clients. We are all dedicated to see this to a dignified end. In fact, not one employee has jumped ship. We are still dedicated as we put this to bed.”

Audiophile or not, this is very sad news for the retail diversity of Logan. And sadder still is the fact that the people that worked here sound like really nice folks. Wishing them a quick recovery during these tough times. Bang & Olufsen opened up in Logan back in 2008.

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know if there’s rhyme or reason why some of the Walk/Don’t Walk lights in the city, specifically on N St in Logan Circle and Shaw, require you to press the button for the Walk light while others do not? I can understand the need to trigger the light at intersections with little pedestrian traffic, but at 14/N there’s almost always someone waiting for the light. It’s certainly not a big deal to push a button, but the problem arises when you walk up, people are already there (but nobody has pressed the button), and the Walk light doesn’t change to Walk, and then you have to scurry in a matter of a few seconds. Just curious.”


ESPN reports:

“CBS basketball analyst and former NBA player Greg Anthony was arrested Friday night and charged with soliciting a prostitute.

Anthony was arrested inside a room at a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in downtown Washington just before 6 p.m. Friday, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press.

The report also said that Anthony was suspected of using a computer as part of the crime, and that his arrest was part of an undercover operation targeting prostitution.”

The Washington Post notes:

“Anthony, 47, a father of four, was arrested in a room at the Doubletree Hotel on Rhode Island Avenue NW, not far from the White House, about 5:46 p.m., according to Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman.”
