“Dear PoP,

I was wondering whether you had any news on Zee’s on Florida and 6th. It has been closed for a few weeks now. Is it permanently closed or renovating while waiting for alcohol license or family holiday? Feel like they were pioneers in a corner that will soon (hopefully) boom.

Meanwhile the market next to the Ethiopian place now is called Smada market (new sign) and seems like they are doing some works on the interiors.

Do you have any news on progress of the pizza place you announced on block of T btw 8th and 7th?

Finally Shawn’s tavern continues to plug along but no way they be ready to open before a few months I think.”

I know Zee’s, 600 Florida Ave. NW, was closed for renovations – anyone else have more details on when they plan on reopening?

Smada Market looks like it’s gonna be a regular bodega. It’s located in the former Yellow House space on the 600 block of T Street, NW.

The pizza place coming to 717 T St, NW is still awaiting permits and inspections.

Shaw’s Tavern says they will open on July 1st at 520 Florida Avenue NW. But looking in the window last weekend makes me think the actual date is a bit further down the road:

“Dear PoP,

After a loooong wait by many young families in LeDroit/Shaw/Bloomingdale, the Park at LeDroit opened Friday, May 27, with little fanfare in time for kids and families to play Memorial Day weekend. The dog park and a few little things await completion, and signage and an opening ceremony are expected in the coming week, but the playground is now officially open.”

The park is located on the site of the former Gage-Eckington Elementary School at 2025 3rd Street, NW in LeDroit Park.

Thanks to Tim for sending the photos.

We judged Yellowhouse back in June ’09. I just noticed that their sign has been flipped over and the building painted white at the 600 block of T Street, NW near the Howard Theater and Florida Ave. I’ll be sure to keep my eye on the space to see if someone else is moving in.

At the time we discussed Yellowhouse there was lots of talk about nearby Zenebech Injera which had temporarily closed but is of course now open with a liquor license.

“Dear PoP,

Saw these on my way to work yesterday morning while biking through LeDroit Park. The mattress may be gone – a trash truck was just off to the right of the image. That’s near 4th and V St, NW. The second is just north of 5th and U St, NW on a north-facing alley wall. Do you think either counts as (guerrilla) art? Or is it just graffiti, albeit of a non-tagging kind?”

What do you guys think – guerrilla art or graffiti?

Ed. Note: On Monday we learned that Prince Charles would be visiting Common Good City Farm in Ledroit Park. Thanks to Tim Breen for sharing some photos and captions.

Gold pinkie ring on one hand, sunglasses in the other, and pocket square neatly folded,
the grey pin-striped prince waves to Shaw residents upon his arrival at the Shaw
neighborhood’s Common Good City Farm. Farm Executive Director Pertula Clark is on
his immediate left and volunteer Dana Bryson is next.

Go-Go Band. Washington’s signature pop music, go-go, greeted the prince courtesy of a live band.

Pertula George escorts the prince around the farm, where he viewed a cooking
demonstration and helped plant a redbud tree.
