620 T St, NW

Well, we’ve been admiring the renovated Howard Theatre from the outside – now have a look inside. It is equally as awesome, if not more so.

Last night I was lucky enough to attend a preview concert headlined by Trombone Shorty and George Clinton.

I went in with tremendous expectations. Unbelievably, they were exceeded. This place single-handedly kicks up the coolness of our city by a notch or three. Have a look:

Back in Jan. 2012 we heard that a new pizza spot was coming to 467 Florida Ave, NW. After getting the heads up from a reader I stopped by yesterday and indeed Pizzarro is open for business. Currently they have pizza, calzones, paninis, pastas and salads. They also deliver within a 2 mile radius (unfortunately their Website is still a few weeks away.) Most prices on the menu range from between $7-$12. Though the gourmet pizzas are priced: $14.99 for a medium, $17.49 for a Large and $19.59 for an extra large.

In the future they’ll also offer crepes, coffee and free wifi.

Looks like pizza and coffee are trending on Florida Ave.

Dear PoPville,

Any news on Shaw’s Tavern? They have an ABRA hearing poster that says their hearing was supposed to be on the 12th, but they sure aren’t serving alcohol still, and nothing on ABRA’s website that I could find. When I asked them, they said they are still “going back and forth.”

Hmm, last week they tweeted:

“Dear Friends, Please mind our new operation hours: Mon-Fri: 8am-4pm Sat & Sun: 9am-4pm”

Anyone else hear an update?

We recently judged their brunch here.

Shaw’s Tavern is located at 520 Florida Ave, NW.

Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, my partner and I walked down U and 14th streets looking for a dessert to take to a party. Not being able to find anything, we were returning to Bloomingdale empty handed via Florida Avenue. To our surprise, we noticed a new shop at 312 Florida Avenue NW called Kuumba Kollectibles. Although it looked like a place for art, women’s jewelry, gift cards, etc, their sign mentioned sweets. Figuring we had nothing to lose, we ducked inside and were thrilled to find not only a very nice shop but one that sells desserts! The very nice ladies running the place offered us samples of sweet potato pie and banana cream pudding, both of which were fantastic. We were in heaven, unable to believe we discovered a nice new shop in almost Bloomingdale and walked out with a very reasonably priced and extremely good sweet potato pie and lemon/vanilla cake.

I’ve attached a picture of the pie, which cost $15 — a heck of a lot cheaper and better than elsewhere. Thanks — and run, don’t walk, to get some awesome pie!

In April 2011 we first learned of Bistro Bohem coming to 1840 6th St, NW (the corner of 6th and Florida Ave, NW.) Well, add this to the pile of amazing transformations hitting DC. I was lucky enough to get an early preview last night and I still haven’t stopped smiling. Not only were the food and drinks amazing but the space itself is super chill. I can see this being a great date spot too. And they had schnitzel – I love schnitzel!

You can see their drink and food menu in pdf below:

You’ll soon see an announcement on their Facebook page announcing a preview for the neighborhood tonight from 7-10pm and a grand opening next week.

Oh yeah – this also only part one! They also will be expanding into the former Zee’s restaurant next door at 600 Florida Ave, NW. That expansion which should take place over the next month will feature a coffee cafe featuring Julius Meinl coffee and fresh pastries which, will be open during the day.

It’s just amazing to watch this section of Florida Ave blossom before my eyes. Remember this is what it used to look like not too long ago.

From the Ledroit Park Listserv:

“During last week’s LeDroit Park Civic Association meeting, a neighbor asked Damon Harvey of DDOT about parking plans to accommodate the soon-to-open Howard Theatre patrons. He stated that a plan was still being worked on.

This topic is on the ANC-2C meeting agenda for tonight, 6:30 pm at the Watha Daniel/Shaw Library, 1630 7th Street NW.”

via Shaw-Howard Listserv:

Among the items on the agenda for Wednesday’s ANC meeting will the plan Gretchen Wharton and I developed after talking to Alex Padro (chair of our ANC) and Myla Moss (chair of the LeDroit Park ANC) about how to deal with parking congestion at present and the increased congestion that the Howard Theatre will cause.

I’ve drafted a proposal about that here including a map of the area where we propose to create “sub-zones.” In a nutshell, only those with a subzone sticker (residents and their guests) could park on one side of each block.

We’re not sure what DDOT might already have in mind, so it’s probably premature to get into the specifics of how this would be implemented (e.g., how they would distribute sub-zone stickers). But we’d welcome any comments or suggestions you might have on the basic idea, and we’ll report back once we hear from DDOT about their thinking. Obviously, with the Howard Theatre set to open April 12 and 54 shows planned between then and early September, the sooner we get this implemented, the better!
