“Dear PoPville,

Walking through Kalorama Park today when I overheard one of the Kalorama Rec Center staff telling a woman she technically was not allowed to set up for a picnic on one of the picnic tables. The woman had laid out a tablecloth and a few plates to hold it down and was explaining that her family would be there shortly. The DC Parks lady was adamant that this was not ok, though she would allow it this time, and saying that permission needed to be asked, or maybe that she couldn’t set it up without others being there? Are there rules I don’t know about here? (more…)

violence

Update: “Today, Mayor Bowser issued the following statement regarding the violent confrontation outside of the Turkish ambassador’s house on Tuesday, May 16:

“What we saw yesterday – a violent attack on a peaceful demonstration – is an affront to DC values and our rights as Americans. I strongly condemn these actions and have been briefed by Chief Newsham on our response. The Metropolitan Police Department will continue investigating the incident and will work with federal partners to ensure justice is served.”

From a press release:

“A 25,197-square-foot lot has just hit the market for $5.6 million, next door to the French Ambassador’s residence. Known for its lavish parties and famous neighbors, the French government is selling the unused land. The available lot is a combination of three parcels, totaling just over one-half acre of property. The lot borders Kalorama Circle NW. Alex Venditti of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Dupont/Logan Circle office has the co-listing.

“This is the first time in four decades that I’m aware of when residentially zoned, raw land has been available for purchase in Kalorama and is being offered on the open market,” said Vendetti.

The residence and property located at 2221 Kalorama Road was acquired by France in 1936. Built in 1911 and designed by Parisian architect Viscount Jules Henri de Sibour, the home was designed for large-scale entertaining. After its construction, the adjacent lots were purchased for added privacy. In 1941, under a new ambassador, additional lots were purchased that overlooked Kalorama Circle. (more…)
