From an email:

Pinkberry, the California tart frozen yogurt brand that started the national craze, will open in Georgetown this fall at 3288 M Street NW. (Yes, that is across the street from a well-known cupcakery…) The 1,200 square-foot store should be ready to start swirling Pinkberry’s signature flavors in October.

West Elm’s Pop-Up Store opened Thursday in Georgetown at 3333 M Street NW.

A far cry from the hulking behemoth of organic bedding and chocolate-wood veneers that used to exist downtown, this is West Elm‘s littlest store and arguably their most charming one. As such, it carries a limited amount of furniture and focuses instead on their collection of textiles and accessories. You’ll find a lot of one-of-a-kind items here: hand-printed ethnic print pillows, vibrant throws made from recycled saris, and gleaming glass mosaic wall decor from India that’s traditionally used to panel elaborate buildings. There are also tons of soaps, candles, and little items that you’ll probably be happy you purchased on an impulse. I got a candle in my little gift bag that smells so good, even my husband approves: Paddywax’s “Library” scent.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

There is a huge fire at building on the 3200 block of M street in Georgetown. Tons of black smoke poring out.”

I haven’t heard anything else from DCfireems. DCfireems tweets:

“3200 blk M St NW – comm bdg – fire from roof – 2 sty – heavy fire & smoke”

Update 1:04pm from DCfireems:

“Update – near Wisc & M St – 2nd alarm comm bldg fire – bulk of fire knocked”

Does anyone happen to know what building this is?

Update 1:06pm from DCfireems:

“Update – 3241 M St NW – Hook Resturant – M St closed – no inj – bul of fire knocked, checking extension”

From a press release:

The cause of today’s fire in Georgetown behind Hook and Tackle Box restaurants is yet to be determined. It is believed that the fire started outside of Hook in the loading dock, however there are no official details as of yet. Owner Jonathan Umbel is waiting on an official investigation from the fire department regarding specific details on today’s regrettable accident.

“The most important thing to me is that our patrons and staff are safe and no one was harmed. We want to thank the DC fire department, which was quick and responsive to prevent any injuries to our staff, neighbors and diners. Unfortunately, both Hook and Tackle Box Georgetown are going to be closed for repairs indefinitely. We will be working feverishly to repair the buildings to have them open for business for our loyal patrons. During this difficult time, Tackle Box’s Cleveland Park location will be open for business and we ask our fans to support our brand so that we may be back on our feet in Georgetown soon.” – Jonathan Umbel, owner of Tackle Box and Hook.

This was a rather strange tweet from @dcfireems Sunday evening:

“Loews Georgetown – 3100 South St (K St) NW – theatre evacuated (poss disturbance) – EMS evalauted several w/ poss inj – MPD investigating”

There were no further updates. A reader happened to be at the theater and writes:

The whole thing was very odd-
At about 9:30 our movie stopped playing and the lights came on. We sat around for a few minutes and an employee came in and said (it was difficult to hear him), “There has been a gun threat in the building, everyone has to evacuate immediately. We got outside and there was a fire truck and 2 ambulances. Because of the large number of people it was difficult to see what was going on. I did see a fireman leave the building at one point and my friend said she saw a couple of stretchers but couldn’t tell if there were people on them.

After a while they let us back in to finish the movie. There weren’t any announcements or anything. After the movie I asked a woman at the ticket booth what happened and she knew less than I did, then I asked the man at the customer service counter and he said he couldn’t say but that we could use our ticket stubs at any Loews theater in the area to see a free movie.
