RFP Released for MBT Extension to Fort Totten!

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced a Request For Proposals (RFP) for the design-build construction of the next phase of the Metropolitan Branch Trail. The Fort Totten section of the Metropolitan Branch Trail will connect from where it currently ends on John McCormack Drive in Brookland, to the Fort Totten Metro Station.

“This is the next major milestone in the District’s commitment to completing the construction of the Metropolitan Branch Trail,” said Leif Dormsjo, DDOT Director. “A design-build approach will help us engage the creativity of the construction community to bring their ideas to the final design and construction.”

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is an 8-mile multi-use trail that connects Union Station in the District of Columbia to Silver Spring Maryland. The new trail will provide a direct off-street route for bicyclists and pedestrians through the Fort Totten area.

The trail will include LED lighting, security cameras, and wayfinding signage. (more…)

UPDATE: Found! Blue point Siamese cat, Emily, missing from the 5000 block of North Capitol St. NW

“My blue point Siamese cat Emily has gone missing from the 5000 block of North Capitol St. NW. She is very friendly and cuddly with people and loves attention, but has been an indoor cat her entire life and is probably scared outdoors. She does not have a collar (I know, I know…).

She means the world to me and I’m offering a good reward to anyone who finds her or helps me track her down. I’ve had her my entire 14 years in DC.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing in the hopes that someone knows the (hopefully happy?) end to this story.

I was at Fort Totten this morning to catch the yellow line to the airport when several of us heard plaintive mews of distress from a little, fuzzy kitten hiding behind the third rail. Several folks tried in the stretches between trains to coax the kitten within reach to no avail. Someone notified the station manager and was apparently told there was nothing he could do because it was rush hour. Another metro employee came by soon after and was more sympathetic (I wish I had gotten a name or number). He was on the radio quickly and the next trains crawled through at a snails pace to give the kitten time to get out of the way. After one train passed, I saw the top of another cat’s ears poke up between the grates directly behind the third rail. I couldn’t see well enough to know whether or was another kitten or a mother cat, but I assume it was a kitten because my guess is the mother would have responded to the other kitten’s cries.

I had to leave to catch my plane, but I’m hoping someone knows if they were able to rescue the kittens! The mewing was heartbreaking.”

Lost Dog Spotted at First and Longfellow St, NE

“I just saw a dog running free -male, brown and tan, with a white chest- and i took a picture. I tried to approached to see if i could get him or check up his tag but he ran to the woods and I didn’t want to chase him. The dog was seeing at the corner of Longfellow and First, NE Washington DC -Fort Totten-South Manor Park area. The dog really look like he was struggling and I would like to help him. I can’t imagine loosing my dog.”

Illegal dumping on NPS land in Ft. Totten by construction crew

“Over the last few mornings as I’ve walked to the Ft. Totten metro, I’ve noticed the construction crew at the Mamie D. Lee site actively shoveling dust and debris into the woods on the NPS property adjacent to the former school.

To be clear, it doesn’t seem like they’re taking debris directly from within the construction site. Rather, it’s the dust and debris that washes out into the side street or is sprayed off the exiting trucks and collects at the end of the street. Either way, it doesn’t seem like they should be shoveling it onto federal park property, where it is currently visible in large gray piles near a drain, so that when it rains, whatever debris (and possibly asbestos) that is there gets washed into our waterways.

I’ve called 311 and filed a complaint with DC Dept. of Public Works (per their recommendation), as well as the US Park Police office who said they would take care of it (but hadn’t as of a week later). And this morning, I saw the Park maintenance guys picking up trash and let them know about it, to which they said “I got you, I’m actually calling right now to complain about it.” I can’t seem to get a hold of anyone directly at DC DoE (forced to leave a message).

Has anyone else seen this happening? Apart from directly confronting the foreman at the site, does anyone have thoughts on who to call or contact directly?
