“This evening, Metro Transit Police arrested a 14-year-old District male on charges of Assault With a Dangerous Weapon for allegedly attacking a Metrobus operator with a Taser in January.
The assault occurred Friday, January 30, 2015, at 5:17 p.m. aboard an E4 bus en route to Fort Totten Station. The bus was at Nicholson St and 6th St, NE, at the time of the attack.
The juvenile, whose identify is being withheld due to his age, allegedly Tased the bus operator on her right arm without provocation. The bus operator was transported to a hospital following the incident.
“Assaulting a bus operator is an act that puts at risk every passenger aboard the bus,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik. “We will continue to do whatever it takes to protect our employees and customers.”
MTPD detectives used video evidence from aboard the bus to help identify the suspect.”

“Metro has selected a venture led by Donatelli Development as developer for its site at the Fort Totten Metrorail Station in Washington, DC.
At Fort Totten, Donatelli is proposing to build approximately 345 residential units and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. The mixed-use project will be designed to achieve LEED Silver certification or better.
The 3.35-acre site, currently used as a surface parking lot, is located at 1st Place and Galloway Street, NE, just to the west of the station entrance. The existing 422 daily parking spaces for Metro commuters will be replaced as part of the project.
The selection of a developer for Fort Totten builds upon a series of major Metro initiatives to advance transit-oriented development projects across the region, including recent developer selections at the Brookland-CUA Station and at Metro’s Navy Yard Chiller Site; the sale of property to the District at Anacostia Station; and the ongoing development of Metro’s property at the Congress Heights Station.
The Fort Totten development agreement is subject to final approval by Metro’s Board of Directors. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2017.”

“Metro Transit Police have arrested and charged Reginald Anthony KLAIBER, 24, of Greenbelt, Md., with assault with a deadly weapon (knife) following an assault on a juvenile transgender female this afternoon aboard a Green Line train. The charges include the possibility of enhanced penalties for hate/bias motivation.
Transit Police officers were dispatched at 4:38 p.m. today for an assault in progress aboard a Branch Avenue-bound Green Line train on approach to Fort Totten. Officers responded to Fort Totten Station, where they apprehended the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene. Officers also recovered a 3.5-inch folding knife.
The victim, a 15-year-old transgender female, was allegedly stabbed in the back by the suspect after the two exchanged words aboard the train. Witnesses told Transit Police detectives that the suspect made bias-motivated remarks about the victim’s transgender status immediately prior to the assault.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening puncture wound. She is listed in stable condition.
If convicted, the suspect faces a maximum penalty on the assault with a deadly weapon charge subject to a 1½ times enhancement under District of Columbia law.”

“Mayor Vincent C. Gray broke ground [Sunday] at the site of the new Legacy Memorial Park, which will honor the nine people who perished during the 2009 Metrorail collision. Mayor Gray was joined by family representatives, members of the nearby community and congregants of Greater Saint Paul Baptist Church. The $1.8 million memorial – which will be located across the street from the church – is scheduled for completion in December.
“The Legacy Memorial Park will honor and celebrate the lives of those involved in the events of that day through reflective design and artwork,” Mayor Gray said. “This park will be a public space for mourning and connecting to the human spirit. We will never forget the nine lives lost that day, and we will forever honor the heroism of our first responders.”
The winning design team of sculptor Barbara Liotta and architects Lucrecia Laudi and Julian Hunt of Hunt Laudi Studio have created a vision for the park that creates a space for people to connect with nature’s beauty amid a setting of artistic reflection to honor the victims, emergency personnel and countless lives altered by the tragic accident. The design team was selected through a competitive process conducted in partnership by the Office of the City Administrator (OCA) and the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities (DCCAH). An Art Selection Panel convened by DCCAH, representing family members’ diverse interests and expertise, reviewed the qualifications of the artists and the finalists’ designs. Bennett Paschen Joint Venture will be the general contractor to build the memorial park.
“Through art, we can create a space and place that adds new meaning to one of the most unfortunate days in the District’s recent history. The families, as well as the public, will have room to reflect,” said DCCAH Executive Director Lionell Thomas. “The memorial incorporates both families’ and citizens’ voices.”
The park design includes nine sculptural artworks, a memorial wall with an inscription written by family of the remembered, landscaping and hardscaping, as well as the installation of new lighting and streetscape amenities.
The Legacy Memorial Park is located at the entrance of the Blair Road Community Garden in Ward 4 at the intersection of New Hampshire and South Dakota Avenues NE.”

“Calvin Shaw, 24, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to 107 years in prison for his role in two shootings, including one in which he opened fire on a group of unarmed teenagers and young men who were gathered for a Fourth of July neighborhood cook-out, killing one of them, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.
Shaw, also known as Sharkim Sharp, was found guilty by a jury in April 2014, following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He was sentenced by the Honorable Jennifer Anderson.
The jury found Shaw guilty of one count of first-degree murder while armed, five counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, two counts of aggravated assault while armed, and related weapons offenses for the fatal shooting, which took place on July 4, 2012 in the 5000 block of First Street NW. Shaw also was found guilty of two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, one count of aggravated assault while armed, and related weapons offenses for an April 18, 2012 shooting that occurred in the same block.
According to the government’s evidence, the murder took place at about 7:55 p.m. on July 4, 2012, when Shaw and two accomplices walked into the 5000 block of First Street NW and opened fire on a group of unarmed teenagers and young men who were gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday and enjoy a cookout.
As the teenagers and young men ran for cover, a gunshot pierced the back of 19-year-old Crevontai Key, severing his aortic arch and killing him. A second 17-year-old victim suffered serious injuries when he was shot in the abdomen. A 15-year-old victim was injured when a bullet grazed the top of the head. A fourth young man was shot in the back, with the bullet exiting his neck. Several other young men were shot at as they ran away. In total, Shaw and his two accomplices fired 28 times at the group of young men.
The jury also found Shaw guilty of the April 18, 2012 shooting of a young man in the same block, and of attempting to shoot another young man who rushed to that victim’s aid. (more…)
