“Dear PoPville,
Any intel on a large building at 4th and T NE right on the MBT trail? The building is fenced off and it looks like they are beginning some kind of renovation. I think it’s an old “Sanitary Grocery” building and has appeared to be empty for a number of years.
It’s just north of where the new Pepco park will be.”

“Assault on 2nd and Todd Pl NE
I’m writing to let the PoPville community know of an assault that happened to me at approximately 6:45am this morning [Thursday] as I was getting into my car to head to work. A man was sitting on the sidewalk near my car mumbling incoherently. While unlocking my car door he approached me from behind and threw a rock at me, striking my elbow. He ran away quickly while I jumped into my car. Luckily the rock missed my head and I only have a swollen arm to deal with. He did not try to snatch my purse.
I filed a police report and they are on the hunt for him during their normal patrol of the neighborhood. He is a black male, approx 5’6″, 140 lbs, age 30-35. He was wearing a white t-shirt and dark pants. He ran down 2nd St NE towards McKinley Tech High School. I believe he probably ducked into the alley parallel to T St. or T St.
Stay safe!”

Weighting Historic Designation: Problems in Democracy Town
“Dear PoPville,
Eckington is one of many rapidly changing communities in Washington DC, with over 4120 residents [1], a number of which are low-income or elderly and/or disabled. Rapid changes in both the economic and racial composition of the neighborhood has stoked fears of gentrification as well as unbridled development, with its rushed and often ugly buildings. Historic Designation seems like a sensible response to the rapid pace of change.
Historic Designation, aiming to preserve the historic and cultural resources of the community, is in many ways a very appealing concept. But its implications are far-reaching and often unconditional. With greater oversight over developers and preservation of character, comes strict limits on homeowner rights and financial burdens on low-income households.
There is a broad set of pros and cons worthy of community discussion, including:

DC’s procedures for setting neighborhood Historic Designation status are at best lacking. Requiring only that a community group research neighborhood history, perform outreach, apply for designation, and defend its position in front of a seven- to nine-person Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB). How the community group and the HPRB determine whether or not to proceed is up to them.
This process is rapidly creating new divisions in an otherwise tight-knit neighborhood. (more…)

Update from MPD:
“On Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at approximately 1142 pm a man responded to the 300 block of U street NE to complete a sales transaction for a pair of shoe that were purchased over the internet. When the man arrived he was approached by the purchaser and two additional individuals. The suspects robbed the man and as he fled to his car the suspects shot at the man striking him in the leg. Fifth District Officers responded to the scene and conducted an initial investigation which lead to the recovery of one semi-automatic hand gun.”
A reader reports:
“In addition to the incident of gun shots that occurred about 12:50 am on April 26, 2016, there were multiple gun shots heard last night and police activity seen, again, in the 1900-2000 block of 3rd St. NE. While there appeared to be an investigation two days ago conducted in the alley behind 3rd Street, last night the police taped off an area directly on 3rd Street near U Street. (more…)
