“Dear PoPville,

My partner, a very meticulous person, had an odd thing happen over the holidays and it sounds like a scam. He parked in the parking garage under the Columbia Heights Target. When he went to exit the garage a short time later he put his ticket in the machine and it said the ticket was unable to be read. The staff person at the exit took the ticket and later came back to say the plate number on the ticket didn’t match the license plate of our car and she asked my partner to follow her to the parking office. As PoPville gets ready to celebrate our 20 year anniversary this November, I’m gonna lean into historical posts a bit leading up to the party. It occurred to me that I (and we collectively) have a LOT of institutional knowledge. So why not share it from time to time? But mostly because these are just fun to remember! So a ‘Dose of DC History’ is born.

This trivial pursuit question that we first posted back in 2009 is simply stunning:

What major U.S. city closed its post office at 14th Street and Irving because rodents were eating the mail, in 1998?

hahaha Columbia Heights represent!! Yikes.

In another dose of dc history, here’s a little video from our IG that we’ll be doing weekly: (more…)

“Smoothie & Juice Bar
We can’t say much… but something juicy is coming soon
2026”

Thanks to Jeremy for sharing with us:

“Signage is up for a new juicery called “La Jugueria” – exciting addition to 11th St in a long vacant property!”

Back in June 2025 we learned that:

“Medical Cannabis Retailer, DC Garden Hill, coming to the long vacant space on 11th Street in Columbia Heights but a juice shop will be on the first floor and the medical cannabis retailer will be located upstairs.”

Scuttlebutt confirmed!

STAY TUNED for more on both.

“Dear PoPville,

I am a Columbia Heights resident writing to highlight some extremely kind strangers in my neighborhood this morning. This AM I was walking two dogs when one slipped out of his harness and proceeded to run away. I left the second dog behind and gave chase. The dog ran for blocks and was approaching Georgia Ave, where I was very sure he was going to be hit by a car, when (more…)

ICYMI: Fences Go Up Around Freedom Plaza and John Marshall Park – “PLAZA BEAUTIFICATION AND FOUNTAIN REHABILITATION”

“Just walked my pup through Meridian Hill/Malcolm X park and on the upper level there are fences that block off the railing that over looks the lower portion of the park and doesn’t allow you to go down the stairs.” (more…)

“2AM Project’s mission is to make late night food more diverse because let’s face it— most menus past midnight are just selling you 15 different ways to say “cheeseburger”.

Thanks to Jeremy for sharing: “Something new coming to the former &pizza space in Columbia Heights – seems like a late night food spot.”

From an email:

“The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington invites you to the 2025 Annual Walk with Mary in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas to celebrate her feast day. This beautiful celebration will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2025. The procession will depart at 11:00 a.m. from the Shrine of the Sacred Heart (16th Street & Park Road, NW), to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (4th Street & Michigan Avenue, NE). The rosary and Mass will follow with Cardinal Robert McElroy as the principal celebrant and Bishop Evelio Menjívar as the homilist.

This year, in light of the current immigration situation, many faithful will be unable to attend. We encourage you to invite your friends and fellow parishioners to take their place; their presence will be a sign of solidarity and of our shared commitment to the dignity of every person. Let us walk together with Mary and pray for our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters, all united as one family of faith!

As the pilgrims process through the streets of Columbia Heights and Park View, MPD will be stopping traffic and neighbors will briefly be unable to enter or exit their street parking spots. Please plan any travel ahead of time if you are in the neighborhood from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sidewalks and bike lanes will remain unaffected.
