Pretty cool house with a basement rental. So is $685,000 a good deal or not?

This is insane. What is this, like, the third one in a month (not including the stuffed polar bear.)? Unbelievable. I was walking back home around 3:30pm on Sat. and some other folks I spoke with said the building had been evacuated since around 2:30pm. This has got to be the most frustrating thing for the proprietors in the mall. But what can you do? If you get a bomb threat, you have to evacuate, yeah? If they ever catch these bastards I hope they get some serious jail time. So let’s speculate on who’s calling in the threats – dumb kids? folks opposed to the mall? serious terrorists?

How long do we think these threats are going to continue for?

I saw lots of red shirts all over the place, turned out they were target employees of course.

I found another very subtle pop up being built on 11th Street. It’s a bit hard to tell from the photo but I like it because it doesn’t jump out at you from the street. My only question is on the size. How much room is actually being added by this pop up? Do you think it’ll provide an entire extra bedroom?

This comes from commenter “Insider”:

“It’s true Carvel is selling Mayorga coffee. However a newsstand owner has already finalized moving into that space when Carvel closes its doors in December. Now for fact 2, the owners of Cafe Asia (downtown) and Asian Bistro (silver spring) have linked up to occupy the former Mayorga space. Cafe Asia will run the sushi bar downstairs and Asian Bistro will serve the oriental cuisine upstairs. I am friends with the owner of Cafe Asia and he has confirmed that there will be no more nightclub activity. Now here is some bonus info. A well established Miami entertainment promoter (owns 8 clubs and lounges) will be taking over the Rumberos restaurant and turning it into a swank lounge. You heard it hear first.”

Too interesting not to post. Has anyone else heard any of these rumors?

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a pretty weak park.

So I was super happy to receive this press release:

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will begin installation of a new play surface in the center area of the Girard Street Park, located next to the Columbia Heights Community Center, 1480 Girard St, NW, on Monday, September 15, 2008.

DPR has worked with the local community during the planning process, and based upon this input, DPR will replace the existing natural grass play surface with a new multi-colored poured-in-place rubber play surface in the central open space of this park. The new rubber playing surface will better withstand the high use of this playground.

During the project, all work areas will be closed to the public, including the playground and seating areas. The basketball court and access to the nearby community garden will remain open, with access to both from Girard Street, NW.

How many times have you been to Columbia Heights Coffee without noticing this amazing old coffee can?  Parkview represent!

Well, I was a little too slow on this house at 1029 Kenyon Street. It is already under contract. The Web site says:

“Leave the car and the condo fees behind & be ready to enjoy the luxury of having everything at your doorstep in a stunning town home renovation. With convenience, location and accessibility where else would you go other than Columbia Heights. Within 2 blocks you are in the heart of shopping, cafes, restaurants, Metro and much more. This home has gleaming hardwood floors extending throughout the first floor a modern kitchen, the perfect back yard to hold all those backyard parties you have been thinking about, 2 nicely sized bedrooms and a stunning full size bathroom with separate tub and shower.”

It’s a pretty small house but the location is pretty killer. So for a two bedroom, one bathroom was $380,000 a good deal?
