Rachel Visits Quiet Mind Yoga

I know lot of readers are into Yoga so I thought it’d be interesting to get a get quick impression from a participant.

Now that it is getting cold out, and I was starting to get burned out of my triathlon-training-oriented exercise routine, I decided to head north on 14th Street and try out Quiet Mind Yoga. I have really enjoyed all their classes. The instructors are great, and the studio has a good vibe. Everyone is friendly, and the classes are not too crowded. I always hated doing yoga at the gym and being squished tight with other people. How can you relax when you can’t do a pose without bumping into someone else? The one drawback of Quiet Mind is its location across the street from the fire station. It can be challenging to achieve a zen state with sirens going off periodically.

Aside from location how does one decide on chosing a particular Yoga Spot over another?

While we’re talking about about Yoga, I received the following email from another great Yoga Spot – Yoga House:

I was wondering if you’d be willing to post about the $5 community classes 6:30-7:30 on Fridays at Yoga House (http://www.yogahousestudio.com), which is right above Temperance Hall. Student teachers (like me) volunteer our time to the community in return for a $5 donation to Yoga House to defray the studio’s costs. There are two classes — Kundalini and Vinyasa. It’s a great way for people to check out the studio or a new form of yoga. What Happened on Harvard Street Yesterday?

A reader asks in the comments. From the CH Listserv:

“Unfortunately I must inform you all that there was another fatal shooting in the area. A young man was gunned down on the 2800 block of 11th St at approximately 8:15. Third District responded quickly. I spoke with a family member and gave my condolences to the grieving family.”

and

“The decadent was 40 year old AA Male. In addition to 3D, Chief Lanier is on site along with Commander Kucik and CM Jim Graham. MPD is investigating. The incident occurred on 11th between Harvard and Girard. If anyone has information please contact our tip line on 202 727 9099 or text on #50411″

and from Council member Jim Graham:

“A short time ago, I came home from the scene of a murder, at 11th and Harvard, where there lay on the cold street the body of man…shot repeatedly. Police said it had all tab telltale marks of a targeted shooting. 5-10 shots. Just after 8 PM.

Details are still very sketchy. Some told me that the victim (said to be 39 years old), and his family might have lived right on on 11th.

Anyway, my thought on this latest example of violence. And my thoughts are with the family and his loved ones in this time of great tragedy for their family.”

Potbelly’s Delivers?

Sweet! I know folks are always curious about delivery options so I thought I’d spread the word. This is, of course, the Potbelly’s located by the Columbia Heights metro. This could be a very dangerous development for me… Surely Potbelly’s has the best chocolate chip cookies in the city, yeah?

“What up with the Wine bar/community center on 11th street? Thought it was supposed to by open the end of this month. Drove past it the other night and the it looks kinda derelict.”

Last I heard they were finalizing the permitting process. I don’t think they were ever supposed to open at the end of the month. I think a more realistic opening will be in December/January. At Columbia Heights Day I did pick up a card that says:

“Room 11 Wine and Dessert Bar featuring wine by the glass and bottle; beer and hand crafted cocktails; specialty coffee and tea; pastries b PAISLEY FIG; cheeses and cured meats; soups, salads, sandwiches; and small plates. For more information email [email protected]”

It sounds like it is going to be well worth the wait!

Inaugural Ten Miles Square show at Bloombars Today

BloomBars is located at 3222 11th St NW, in a converted garage next to Wonderland Ballroom. From their site: “BloomBars is Columbia Heights’ new decidedly underground, spontaneous and inspirational space for local and global art, music and film you haven’t seen or heard. It’s raw. It’s organic, and slowly rising from a seed—offering an opportunity for early guests to say, ‘I watched it grow when it looked like it might be a weed.'”

Opening is Friday, October 24 at 8 – 11 p.m., featuring various local acts on the stage throughout the night. On Saturday the venue is open 4 to 11 p.m., with a BloomBars film screening of “So Goes the Nation” at 8 p.m. Sunday, roll up between noon and 4 p.m. for the last day of the show.

Suggested $5 donation goes to keep the lights on in the wholly volunteer driven BloomBars.”

Freedom of Speech Represents in Columbia Heights – Black Hebrews

Ah, these guys were preaching something or other outside the Columbia Heights metro Saturday afternoon. I’m fairly certain that they are insane. I don’t know that 100% but there was some definite jibberish going on. I remember there was some city council laws being debated about how loud they could amplify their preachings. I hope that law passed. I find these folks can be intimidating to random folks. Me, I think they’re harmless but irritating and I’m happy to tell them as such. But I saw other folks that felt very uncomfortable and I think it is unpleasant to have such folks preaching on public property. So what do you think – is this simply a case of free speech? Are they harmless or a menace?
