A reader asks in the comments. From the CH Listserv:

Unfortunately I must inform you all that there was another fatal shooting in the area. A young man was gunned down on the 2800 block of 11th St at approximately 8:15. Third District responded quickly. I spoke with a family member and gave my condolences to the grieving family.”

The decadent was 40 year old AA Male. In addition to 3D, Chief Lanier is on site along with Commander Kucik and CM Jim Graham. MPD is investigating. The incident occurred on 11th between Harvard and Girard. If anyone has information please contact our tip line on 202 727 9099 or text on #50411″

and from Council member Jim Graham:

“A short time ago, I came home from the scene of a murder, at 11th and Harvard, where there lay on the cold street the body of man…shot repeatedly. Police said it had all tab telltale marks of a targeted shooting. 5-10 shots. Just after 8 PM.

Details are still very sketchy. Some told me that the victim (said to be 39 years old), and his family might have lived right on on 11th.

Anyway, my thought on this latest example of violence. And my thoughts are with the family and his loved ones in this time of great tragedy for their family.”

  1. That’s horrible. Thanks for the update, though.

  2. “Decadent” ?!?

Unless this is a Temple of the Dog song, that should be decedent.

  3. Intended victim killed with no bystanders hit. Sounds like an efficient killing to me. A buddy of mine lives at 11th & Columbia. He was coming home at the time. Police told him the guy was hit 5X. Anyone shot 5X was targeted and likely deserves little sympathy for the probable thuglife he was trying to lead.

  4. what is an “AA male” ?

  5. My guess is AA = African American.

  6. “Anyone shot 5X was targeted and likely deserves little sympathy for the probable thuglife he was trying to lead.”

    WOW! Nate….WOW!

that is all I have to say.

  7. rcr – that’s awesome – now i’m going to have that song in my head all day

  8. “Anyone shot 5X was targeted and likely deserves little sympathy for the probable thuglife he was trying to lead.”

Damn, are you truly as stupid as that comment makes you sound?

  9. You naive little creeps need to crawl back into your caves and take out your society-hating deathstyles on someone else. Nate was right. You don’t get shot execution style if you’re clean UNLESS you’re a witness. You think I have sympathy for the guys committing crimes on the corner (like smoking weed?) Oh hell no! I have sympathy for the widows who are afraid to go out at 8pm. So barring the story that this person was a witness in a trial? I have zero sympathy and I’m the biggest “hater” of them all- the rest of you can slink back into your dens.

  10. @nate – That may be true, that may be false. We have very limited information at this point to explain the back story to this violent episode. Its possible that the victim was a criminal whose involvement in illegal activities led to his premature demise… Its possible he was diddlin’ another mans lady… Its also possible that he was a concerned brother, uncle, or neighbor who didn’t make life easy for a group of corner boys and paid the price for speaking up against this very type of senseless violence and criminal activity in our hood.

What for certain is that you don’t know what happened and neither do I. Perhaps we should save the judgemental speculation and inflammatory rhetoric until we do.

  11. I agree with Flipfloppirate on this one. I think it’s too early to condemn this person of nafarious doings when we really don’t know.

  12. There’s no point in arguing with ignorant statements like those from nate and Neener, so I’ll just defer to Flipflopirate’s post above.

  13. The key word here is that he worked at a community center.

The community centers are gang recruitment hotspots in Columbia Heights. This has been known in our community since the Latin American Youth Center shootings in 1999.

those of you who don’t know the neighborhood or just moved here, ok, I’ll buy it that you don’t know how the street works. Those of you who lived here for more than 5 years? Sorry, no one is that naive.

  14. “Of the victim, Lanier learned a few things: “He mentors kids, coaches basketball.” She doesn’t know his name. It hasn’t been released yet; she says he is married and his wife still doesn’t know.”

-Yeah, sounds like he definitely got what he deserved.

  15. Neener – I’ve been here 19 years. I disagree with your nasty assessment, and am not naive.

  16. MPD never tells the complete story. Believe me. I had a friend on jury duty on a very prominent trial. What gets released in the news is never the complete story. Noone shoots you 5X unless for no reason. After the first 2-3 shots, the killer had to be standing over him shooting the man while he was on the ground. That tells me that it goes deeper than this guy had an argument with someone.

But let’s assume this guy was squeaky clean. Then what does that say about the killer? Shoot a man 5X for nothing. That is an even bigger indictment on the communities that these men hail from.

  17. Neener: “those of you who don’t know the neighborhood or just moved here, ok, I’ll buy it that you don’t know how the street works.”

Yeah, I’m sure you’re an OG gansta mack.

nate: “But let’s assume this guy was squeaky clean. Then what does that say about the killer? Shoot a man 5X for nothing. That is an even bigger indictment on the communities that these men hail from.”

Notice how he’s trying to ease away from that earlier statement?

Both of you look like dumbasses right about now.

  18. It’s comments like these that make me want to stop reading this blog altogether.

re:>”That is an even bigger indictment on the communities that these men hail from.”

Uhhmmm, it’s the same community from which I hail…from which we all hail.

Had I not stopped in for a beer with friends that evening, it could have been me who got shot. And I certainly can’t say I mentor children or coach basketball like Mr. Beamon. Sheesh, what would you be saying about me?

Louis Beamon’s sister, mother, and grandmother were nearby. You think they were living the thug life, too? You think they deserve little sympathy?

  19. Exactly Binklesworth, some things should just go unsaid. Nate and Neener both know the saying never judge a book by its cover. You say MPD covers thing up, what is there to cover up 1 hour into an investigation. (a suspect) The body was on 11th street until after 11pm from an 8 pm shooting. I am a resident of Columbia Heights and have witnessed lots of senseless crimes and violent acts against people I know where not living a thug lifestyle but a lifestyle like yours and mine. Get up, go to work and take care of your family. No one deserves to shot be 5x or no times for that matter. But, you Nate seem ignorant to what is going on around you and Neener you sound even more ignorant in agreement with a person who has little sympathy for the dead. I actually knew the victim and while he may not have been a saint he was a good man and didn’t deserve that.

  20. Sorry, but I am new the the neighborhood and found out what happened on my way home. Can someone explain the neighborhood a bit better as noted above? For those of us that are new?

  21. Furthermore nate, you son of a BITCH. My cousin was not a drug dealer asshole. He was a head coach of a great football organization. You are fortunate nate is all that is known…

  22. To NATE AND ALL OF YOU SON OF A BITCHESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! MY COUSIN WAS A VERY GOOD MAN…….IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY THEN DON’T SAY SHIT AT ALLLLLLLL.

    A LOVING FAMILY MEMBER
