We last looked at this park when we took a look at the protest benches.

From an email:

“Dear PoP,

I was walking home today along 14th St. in Columbia Heights and noticed this pile of steel in the middle of the road where demolition of the street is taking place.

It appears this is the old streetcar track from the line that used to run up 14th street during the first half of the 1900’s

As someone who loves old photos of neighborhoods, and any urban archaeological relic that speaks of a time gone by, this was a goldmine for me.

It made me a little sad to see them there, as I was the only one even looking at them, and thinking about how important they were when they once linked this part of the city to downtown D.C.
People drove by, horns were honking, a fire engine came blaring through, people strolled along with their headphones on, and others just gazed straight ahead without even glancing over to wonder what this discarded pile of junk even was.

I rushed home to get my camera and snapped some photos.”

Super cool. I look forward to their new cousins on H St, NE and later Georgia Ave, NW to become active!

About a week ago we learned that Rita’s Custard and Italian Ice was closing in the Columbia Heights Plaza and possibly opening up across the street. Well, I’ve just learned from an awesome new tipster who has been very accurate so far what is going into the spot – “Fro-Yo”.

Fro-Yo currently has two locations in Chevy Chase and Metro Center. The tipster says they should be open by Summer. As a recent fan of frozen yogurt I think that is an awesome addition to the plaza. You guys think a frozen yogurt spot will do well there?

I’ve been enjoying our looks at streets that have an aberration in the regular strip of row houses. I found this block curious because it is one of the few I’ve seen that had a gap not caused by an alley. Do you suppose it happened because someone measured wrong? It’s from 11th street just north of Otis in Columbia Heights.

From an email:

“On Wednesday, March 31, DPR held a third community planning meeting to discuss improvements to the 11th and Monroe Street Park (aka Columbia Heights Park). The nearly final concept is posted on DPR’s website. We hope to make a presentation at an upcoming ANC 1A meeting.

Please send comments to me directly as I’m on several list serves: ([email protected])”

I’m surprised we haven’t judged the Park Road Community Church (above), located on Park Road just west of Sherman Ave. Ed. Note: More on Sherman Ave redevelopment coming later this week. This is a pretty unique looking church. Any fans of the style?

And thanks to twitter user @yooooken for sharing the great photo below.
