Still, A Really Sad Sight

A reader sends in word and the photo from the 1300 block of Monroe St, NW. The reader writes that this is the third attempt at an eviction.

It is not as crazy a scene as the one we saw at the end of Sept. at 11th and Otis St, NW but it is still heartbreaking. I know the tenant has responsibilities and of course needs to meet their financial obligations but I wish there was a less humiliating way to do an eviction. And I also respect the frustration that the landlord must feel. I’m not saying I have the answer, I’m just saying these scenes are always a sad sight.

SportsZone Hiring at DC USA in Columbia Heights

As first reported here back in August SportsZone will be coming to DC USA on the 14th St, NW side. They are hoping to open by the end of Nov. I just got word that they are now hiring. From an email:

Sports Zone is now accepting employee applications for Department Managers, Cashiers, and Full and Part Time Sales Associates for their new store currently under construction at DC USA, 3100 14th Street, N.W, Suite 113, Washington, DC 20010.

Not really good photos here but I like the location so close to Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. Any one familiar with this building? Does $1100 sound reasonable for a studio?

Larry’s Pet Supplies Coming to 3303 11th St, NW in Columbia Heights

“Dear PoP,

Wanted to see if you knew any info on the “Larry’s Pet Supplies” store that appears to be coming to 3303 11th St NW or roundabout. My wife and I noticed a bright sign in the window yesterday while going to the dog park, and didn’t know if you had any more info.”

Thanks to all who sent photos and emails about this great development. I happened to run into Larry (pictured above) on Sat. afternoon. He is a super nice guy (and Vietnam Vet.) who is really excited to provide this needed service to the community. I think it’s a great location given that just a block away is a de facto dog park at 11th and Park Rd, NW.

The store is scheduled to open Feb. 1st and the hours will be 10am – 7pm Tues. – Sun. (closed Mon.)

Shooting at 1400 Block of Clifton St, NW in Columbia Heights

“Tonight around 0200 hours, members of the Third District were called to the area of the 1400 block of Clifton Street, NW for the sounds of multiple gunshots. Once on the scene, the units found an victim suffering from several gunshot wounds to his body. The male was then taken to a local hospital… If anyone has any information relating to this incident , please call 202-727-9099..”

Photo above from outside the Columbia Heights Metro on 14th St, NW, MPD response due to a suspicious package. It was all cleared by 11:30pm.

Old grenades Found in rowhouse in Columbia Heights

“Dear PoP- any idea what is going on at 13th and Park? Cops have been here for about 2 hours, the streets are shut down in both directions, and there are some folks in camo and helmets standing in the street. Seems pretty strange.”

This is def. one of the stranger alerts from fireems:

“Haz Mat- 13th St & Park Rd NW- DC F&EMS Haz Mat, Spec Ops assisting MPD with explosives investigation – old grenades in rowhouse(renovation)”

Further proof that you’ll never know what you’ll find during a renovation. Crazy!

“update – 13th St & Parks Rd NW – DC F&EMS assisiting MPD w 2 grenades – situation is resolved – DC F&EMS Haz mat, Spec Ops clearing scene”

Dear PoP – Light Pollution from Howard Univ. Stadium

“Dear PoP,

I live at the corner of 14th and Fairmont in Columbia Heights. I have been having a problem with the stadium lights at Howard (I think these lights are from Howard) University being left on every single night, all night, regardless of whether there is a football game or not. The stadium lights are searing straight into my apartment. (Not to mention are a huge energy waste.) Do you know if any other readers have complained about light pollution from Howard? Has anyone else that lives on Fairmont, Euclid, or Girard Streets been able to read in their living room at midnight with no lamps on? What does one do about light pollution? Should I call the university politely? Please help!”

This is a very interesting question as I’ve been hearing folks mention light pollution lately (I wasn’t too familiar with it). But I passed the stadium recently when there was no game and indeed the lights were on at like 11:30pm (so I doubt a practice was going on). I know some folks will be disturbed with this question arguing “we have bigger fish to fry” but I really do think this is an interesting question.

Number one – why do you think the lights are left on all the time? Safety? Do you think it would be helpful to contact the university? And aside from this specific example – have you noticed other cases of egregious light pollution in other parts of the city?
