The Craigslist ad says:

“Central AC/Heat
Upgraded Apt.
Walk in Closet
Breakfast Bar
Resident Controlled Entry
24 Hrs. Emergency Maintanance Srv.
Covered Parking Rental
Metro Accessible”

Not really good photos here but I like the location so close to Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. Any one familiar with this building? Does $1100 sound reasonable for a studio?

“Dear PoP,

Wanted to see if you knew any info on the “Larry’s Pet Supplies” store that appears to be coming to 3303 11th St NW or roundabout. My wife and I noticed a bright sign in the window yesterday while going to the dog park, and didn’t know if you had any more info.”

Thanks to all who sent photos and emails about this great development. I happened to run into Larry (pictured above) on Sat. afternoon. He is a super nice guy (and Vietnam Vet.) who is really excited to provide this needed service to the community. I think it’s a great location given that just a block away is a de facto dog park at 11th and Park Rd, NW.

The store is scheduled to open Feb. 1st and the hours will be 10am – 7pm Tues. – Sun. (closed Mon.)

From MPD:

“Tonight around 0200 hours, members of the Third District were called to the area of the 1400 block of Clifton Street, NW for the sounds of multiple gunshots. Once on the scene, the units found an victim suffering from several gunshot wounds to his body. The male was then taken to a local hospital… If anyone has any information relating to this incident , please call 202-727-9099..”

Photo above from outside the Columbia Heights Metro on 14th St, NW, MPD response due to a suspicious package. It was all cleared by 11:30pm.

“Dear PoP- any idea what is going on at 13th and Park? Cops have been here for about 2 hours, the streets are shut down in both directions, and there are some folks in camo and helmets standing in the street. Seems pretty strange.”

This is def. one of the stranger alerts from fireems:

“Haz Mat- 13th St & Park Rd NW- DC F&EMS Haz Mat, Spec Ops assisting MPD with explosives investigation – old grenades in rowhouse(renovation)”

Further proof that you’ll never know what you’ll find during a renovation. Crazy!

Update 1:18pm from dcfireems:

“update – 13th St & Parks Rd NW – DC F&EMS assisiting MPD w 2 grenades – situation is resolved – DC F&EMS Haz mat, Spec Ops clearing scene”

“Dear PoP,

I live at the corner of 14th and Fairmont in Columbia Heights. I have been having a problem with the stadium lights at Howard (I think these lights are from Howard) University being left on every single night, all night, regardless of whether there is a football game or not. The stadium lights are searing straight into my apartment. (Not to mention are a huge energy waste.) Do you know if any other readers have complained about light pollution from Howard? Has anyone else that lives on Fairmont, Euclid, or Girard Streets been able to read in their living room at midnight with no lamps on? What does one do about light pollution? Should I call the university politely? Please help!”

This is a very interesting question as I’ve been hearing folks mention light pollution lately (I wasn’t too familiar with it). But I passed the stadium recently when there was no game and indeed the lights were on at like 11:30pm (so I doubt a practice was going on). I know some folks will be disturbed with this question arguing “we have bigger fish to fry” but I really do think this is an interesting question.

Number one – why do you think the lights are left on all the time? Safety? Do you think it would be helpful to contact the university? And aside from this specific example – have you noticed other cases of egregious light pollution in other parts of the city?

You can find more info here and photos here.

I’ve had some requests to show some fixer uppers and when I saw this one I thought it was perfect. What do you think of the potential? How much will it cost to fix up? Does $375,000 sound reasonable given the work that is needed?

Photo by MJ, first ever Red Derby Roof Deck opening 10/22/10

We’ve known for a couple of years that Red Derby (located at 14th and Quincy St, NW) was looking to get a roof deck but excitement began to build in earnest when permits were filed this past June. As some know, I was sick as a dog last week but I started receiving emails Friday night about the Derby’s deck opening and at that moment I fully recovered. Special thanks to MJ for sending some photos and sending the very early word. Also thanks to all the other readers who sent in word about the opening.

As some will note, it is a bit unfortunate that the deck opens just as cold weather is coming however, this weekend was beautiful and when I checked it out on Sat. I also spotted some heaters. So unless we get a crazy winter like last year, I’d say it’ll be open for a while. And of course next Spring is absolutely going to kick ass.

One of the best bars (if not the best bar) in DC just got way better. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The Museum of Unnatural History

When we first heard the scuttlebutt that an an organization called 826DC would be opening up in the old Score space in the Columbia Heights Plaza, I thought it sounded cool but after visiting them yesterday afternoon – I am blown away.

I chatted briefly with Joe Callahan, Deputy Director 826 DC, Mike Scalke, Program Manager and Erin Archuleta Development and Site Director from 826 National. The DC open house is this Saturday:

“On Saturday, October 23 from 12 to 4 PM, 826DC will be throwing open our doors for our community open house. We’re located at 3233 14th St. NW.

Come explore our fantastic storefront, The Museum of Unnatural History, and hear about our workshops, field trips, in-school, and after-school tutoring programs for kids. The event is open to the public, so please: stop by. Say hi.”

Their Mission Statement explains what they do:

“826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.”

If you are interested in volunteering you can sign up at the open house or on their Web site (you can also donate here.)

All I’ll say is that the space is amazing (see tons of photos after the jump) and the people I met are filled with a contagious enthusiasm. And at the very least the store itself is worth checking out (from a press release):

“The newest chapter of the nationally renowned 826 writing centers – founded in San Francisco by bestselling author Dave Eggers and award-winning educator Nínive Calegari, and with eight centers across the country – officially opens its doors in Columbia Heights on Saturday. 826DC has operated workshops and provided assistance to teachers in DC Public Schools since fall 2008, reaching more than 1,000 students and publishing two books compiled from students’ writing. The opening of its own dedicated space will expand the nonprofit’s reach to thousands more District students.

To raise funds, inspire creativity, and advertise their programs to the local community, 826 centers also include a street-front retail store filled with unusual products, entertaining signage, and, of course, their books for sale. San Francisco’s Pirate Supply Store sells glass eyes and one-of-a-kind peg legs, 826NYC’s Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company offers custom-fit capes. Located on the heavily trafficked 14th Street in the hub of this vibrant neighborhood, 826DC will also house its own storefront, The Museum of Unnatural History, an homage to fictional scientists that will spark creativity and create a fun and safe atmosphere for field trips, after-school tutoring, and weekend workshops.”

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
