3418 11th St, NW next to Columbia Heights Coffee

Yesterday I had a chance to check out the progress at Maple coming to 3418 11th St, NW next to Columbia Heights Coffee. And now I see how they got their name – check out the bar:

The detail is amazing:

So chatting with the owners revealed that they will be opening by the end of the month. They also confirmed that they will be serving modern American/Italian dishes. But what I hadn’t realized was that they have a Enomatic wine dispenser which will hold 8 bottles:

And they’ll also have two beers on tap:

Stay tuned for an exact opening date in the next couple of weeks. How ’bout that bar?

In March 2011 we learned that a new bar and restaurant called Mad Momos was coming to 3605 14th St, NW (at Perry Place.) Late last week I took a quick tour to see how things were shaping up. Holy cow. This is a serious renovation. While they’re keeping some historical details, the house was built around 1910/20, this is a near complete gut job.

First floor

If their vision is realized this place has the potential to be absolutely amazing. There is going to be a small patio out front and dining on the first floor. While the second floor will lead to a lounge and outdoor beer garden!

Second floor

I can’t wait to show the after pictures. It’s hard to believe but if all goes well they are aiming for a June opening. But we’ll revisit before then with more details as construction progresses.

Did I mention the outdoor beer garden?

So wild to watch the changing landscape. You can watch the progression of the Old Nehemiah Strip Mall to demo to construction here. It will:

“consist of 255 residential homes, ground floor retail, two-level underground parking structure, and associated amenities.”

Dear PoPville,

This appears to be a “pop-up” done years ago. The house is located at 3519 New Hampshire Avenue NW. It’s quite a remodel that looks to have been done sometime ago.

This was actually one of the first pop ups we ever judged. It was also the first ever first ever GDoN pop up posted in Aug. 2008.

From the OPs email I can’t tell if they like it or not? When we first spoke about it back in the day it was nearly universally hated. So four years later – what do you think now?

From MPD:

At approximately 0630 this morning, police were called to the IHOP restaurant located at 3100 14th [St, NW, entrance on Irving St.] for a man shot inside. Officers were advised that there was an altercation inside the restaurant which resulted in an adult male being shot. The victim was transported to a local hospital. Anyone with information relating to this is asked to call 202 727 9099.

Thanks to a few good citizens, we have a very good description of 2 people of interest and asking for any additional information you may have relating to them or there whereabouts, the first is a B/M with dreads, approx 6’1, 165 lbs, wearing green pants and walking east bound on Irving street from the IHOP in the company of a B/F light complexion, heavy build… Anything you may have on these 2 may be helpful and you are encouraged to call at 202 727 9099.

3313 11th St, NW at Lamont

A couple of weeks ago we learned that the new taqueria coming 11th and Lamont St, NW would be called El Chucho’s Cocina Superior. Late last week, Gordon Banks, was kind enough to invite me on an early tour of the space. Gordon is a full time partner of El Chucho’s with Jackie Greenbaum. Previously Gordon was a manager at Quarry House and Side Bar in Silver Spring.

At first glance it doesn’t look like much construction has been completed:

But significant projects like the plumbing and reinforcing the ceiling to support the roof deck have been completed:

In the first photo above note the big window which will roll back and offer and indoor outdoor bar like some may have seen at Pearl Dive in Logan Circle. Inside (around 850 square feet) will seat about 36 people. There will also be a few patio seats out front but the main outdoor area will be on the roof deck.

The roof deck will seat around 40 people. And I’m loving the view in the distance of the tops of row houses on Lamont:

Gordon is hoping for a May opening. At that time you’ll see a menu influences by LA Street food, Mexico and Santa Fe. Chef Diana Davila-Boldin’s family is from Mexico and she has studied in Oaxaca. Most of the food options will be under $10.

But there will also be a serious drink menu including lots of tequilas and mezcals. One of my favorite features will be the $5 margaritas on draft that will flow whenever they’re open. For those who don’t like alcohol there will be Mexican coca cola as well as other homemade sodas.

Sweet!

From an email:

We are really excited to tell you about Wangari Gardens, a new garden park that is being established in Washington, DC, on a 2.7 acre space of land that is bursting with creative potential! With a mission inspired by the legacy that Professor Wangari Maathai left behind, we are in the brainstorming, planning, and outreach stages of things right now, trying to get as much input as possible from the community about how the space can best be used to benefit everyone. Some of the main ideas include a community garden, a playground, a fruit tree orchard, a butterfly/sensory garden, a walking/wheelchair trail, a rain garden, an outdoor classroom, and a dog park.

The most immediate plans are to begin constructing raised beds for the community garden on March 18th, with a park opening date set for April 1st. In order for this to happen, we need your help! There are endless opportunities for volunteering your time and skills, whether it be through fundraising, planning, building, planting, teaching, etc. Check out the attached flier for upcoming volunteer dates!

If you are interested in being a plot-holder in the community garden, please see the attached application.

If you would like to donate to the Wangari Gardens project, you can do so through a tax-deductible donation on Paypal, accessed through our website (this should be working in the next day or two). Your donation goes straight to the project through Groundwork Anacostia, an amazing environmental justice organization in DC who has agreed to be our fiscal agent.

We are so excited to get this project going, but understand and wish for it to be a fluid creative process, involving as many people and opinions as possible. All input is much appreciated. Feel free to use this flier to spread the word about Wangari Gardens, especially to those who live nearby the park site. We have some upcoming outreach days to make sure that all of the neighbors know what is going on, but the more people talking about it, the better.
