El Atardecer is having a grand opening at 3475 14th St, NW (the former DC Fish Carryout space.) A post card announcing the opening says:

“A new location of La Morenita restaurant. Come join us for our grand opening celebration with lots of fun: Clowns.prizes.games and food and drink specials until Sunday August 25th.”

I chatted briefly with the owner who was a super nice guy. Looking forward to trying them out!

package_thief

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to see how many people were affected by package thieves (or thief) in my immediate area. Our building, at 13th and Euclid, has been targeted very consistently (once a month to even a couple times a month) and a thief enters our building, steals packages (or just the contents) and leaves. We live in a 25 unit building with no doorman and a standard key fob/buzz in system.

Anyone else in the area getting hit regularly? Anyone have success with professional security/camera service? How about with a DIY web-cam type devices? Any cool ideas or “locker boxes” people use to secure packages?Anyone have ideas on how they get in (besides being buzzed in by a careless resident? Any other suggestions to deter and prevent?

We do encourage our folks to have things delivered to work and tell people not to buzz in unknown folks (even if they say they are the delivery man). But it still happens and it is getting very frustrating and we are not sure there is much the Police can help us with.”

In late July we admired the New Dunbar High School in Truxton Circle. Now check out the renovated Cardozo High School in Columbia Heights at 13th and Clifton St, NW. Thanks to Pablo Martinez Monsivais (the other Pablo) for sharing these amazing photos.

“Dear PoPville,

Last week we got egged on our front porch. Two eggs, poorly thrown but not that far off from hitting one of us as we sat there. Two weeks ago the same thing happened to my neighbor across the street [13th and Monroe St, NW].

Is this a thing? It’s such a petty occurrence that it hardly seems worth mentioning but I’m curious whether other folks are getting eggs thrown at them while they sit on their porches.”

Permit master ‏@WashBizNeibs tweeted the news on Friday:

“Attention low budget shoppers — Five Below is coming to DC USA.”

From Five Below’s website:

Five Below, Inc. is the leading retailer of trend-right, extreme-value merchandise to the teen and pre-teen market – all for $1.00 to $5.00.

Five Below’s dynamic assortment of merchandise includes everything from sporting goods, games, fashion accessories and jewelry, to hobbies and collectibles, bath and body, candy and snacks, room décor and storage, stationery and school supplies, video game accessories, books, dvds, iPhone accessories, novelty and “gag,” and seasonal items. Five Below combines exceptional value with trend-right, quality merchandise in a vibrant shopping environment.

I wonder if they are coming into the space that was once touted as the future home of Ellwood Thompson’s before they backed out? If so, it’ll be right next to the coming soon Petco on Irving Street.

“Dear PoPville,

While walking my dog this morning in Meridian Hill Park a man approached me and proceeded to expose and pleasure himself. I yelled that I would call police he quickly apologized, zipped up and headed out of the park. I contacted the police to report the incident and they confirmed they would contact officers in the area. This occurred on the far side of the park on the stairs closest to 16th Street and Florida. He was last seen heading down Florida towards 17th-18th Street area.

Description:
Hispanic Male
5 ft. 6 in.
Wearing: white tshirt, jean shorts and a navy or black back pack

Just a warning to those in the area, he approached casually, I honestly thought just harmless exchange of pleasantries, before I realized what he was doing.”

Ed. Note: MPD has alerted Park Police as well.

From the folks at Meridian Pint:

“What better way to celebrate DC Beer Week than by winning free draft beer all week long?!

Meridian Pint is partnering with Lost Rhino for a week-long DC Beer Week event to find the Rhino. The “Lost Rhino” has wandered all the way from Ashburn, VA and is now romping the streets of the District trying to find his crash. He will be in different neighborhoods all week checking out some of DC’s best spots. Follow Meridian Pint’s Twitter or Facebook for times and neighborhoods that the Rhino will be visiting.

The Rhino isn’t shy; take a picture with him with the hash tag #IfoundtheRhino and post it to the Pint’s Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram account! We will pick one picture everyday from Monday, August 12th to Friday, August 16th. Each picture that we pick will be the daily winner! Winners will be announced by 7pm and will receive FREE DRAFT BEER for the day that they won AND for the remainder of DC Beer Week!

Happy hunting and remember, everyone loves the Rhino!”

3334-3336 14th Street, NW

In May 2012 this was the space where we thought an Olive Garden could be coming. We finally know who the tenant will be after a liquor license application was posted out front at the corner of 14th and Monroe St, NW. Thanks to the many, many readers who sent emails.

Alas it will become a TGI Fridays:

“New casual American cuisine restaurant. Entertainment will consist of occasional Deejay and/or Karaoke. Seating for 290 patrons, total load is 325. Sidewalk Café with seating for 16 patrons.”

Hours will be Sunday through Saturday 10am-2am.

This is located right across the street from  Ruby Tuesday to the east. I wonder who will have the better salad bar?

And it’s located across the street from the Dance Institute to the north:

And a block away to the south is DCUSA:
