18 Year Old Arrested in 7pm Stabbing Homicide at 14th and Perry Pl, NW a few weeks ago

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced an arrest has been made in the homicide of 41-year-old Inoe Javier Salvador, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, which occurred on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in the 1400 block of Perry Place, Northwest.

On Tuesday, November 11, 2014, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch arrested 18 year-old Edgar Blanco of Northwest Washington, DC charging him with First Degree Murder in the stabbing death of Inoe Javier Salvador.”

“On Today’s Date [Wednesday] at approximately 1845 hrs, during the evening tour, Fourth District Officers responded to the 3600 block 13th Street, NW, for a Burglary 2 in progress. A look out was broadcasted for a subject taking items from the neighbor’s garage. The suspect was stopped by the police and an investigation lead to the arrest of the subject for Burglary 2 and Assault on a Police Officer. It was through alert citizens and hard working officers that this suspect was apprehended. Thanks to all for their hard work; Good Job!”

Laotian Restaurant, Thip Khao, opening early December – A Peek inside and at the Menu

Thanks to all who’ve sent emails about Thip Khao looking ready to open in the former Thai Thanic II space in Columbia Heights. They’ve been having some soft openings and will open to the public next week in early December. [Ed. Note: I’m told something came up last night and the chef will be traveling to Laos shortly for a family matter and they will open upon her return.] I was lucky enough to attend a preview dinner last night and I’m psyched to say the anticipation is warranted. Admittedly I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food but I have to say the Knap Pah (with Sea Bass) was one of the more delicious entrees I’ve had in a long time. It is super exciting for this section of 14th Street to get a restaurant of this quality. After last night I have no problem saying this a worthy neighbor to Le Caprice. Unfortunately my photos aren’t the best but have a glimpse inside and at the menu served last night – and more importantly when they open definitely be sure to check them out.

“Looks like So Others Might Eat has acquired 1433, 1435 Spring Road NW, an affordable apartment complex.”

2 Armadillos Hand-Roasted Chickpeas coming to Columbia Heights Plaza

Interesting replacement for Julia’s Empanadas Columbia Heights location which closed back in January of 2013 – 2 Armadillos Hand-Roasted Chickpeas. Though on twitter 2 Armadillos say “we are figuring out our office space” so it’s not yet clear what, if any, walk in retail component there will be.

Their website says:

Our first batch of crispy chickpeas was made in a tiny New York City oven that was so old it didn’t even have numbers on the dials. The year was 2011, and Greg was just a hungry medical student looking to get through a crazy day at work without running to the vending machine for a bag of chips or a candy bar. He started roasting chickpeas at night, seasoning them with whatever was in the cupboard, and throwing them in a plastic bag to help deal with his daily 4:00pm hunger pangs. His coworkers would look over with curiosity when they heard the afternoon crunching, and inevitably he would offer up some snacks. They were a hit! That’s when he realized he was on to something special, but it would be a while before he had the idea to start a business.

Jimmy and Greg would frequently discuss the many problems with our food system: it’s responsible for the current obesity and diabetes epidemics, it’s bad for the planet, and it creates an environment that perpetuates malnutrition and food insecurity. It had been over a year since Greg started making his chickpeas in that tiny NYC kitchen when everything finally clicked. Jimmy had finished a big real estate deal and they were brainstorming new projects for him to take on. It was on a whim that Greg suggested they start a business to create a better snacking alternative. He never expected Jimmy to get as excited as he did. And just like that, they couldn’t stop talking about how the broken food system was ripe for the 2Armadillos revolution.

“Medium Pitched Humming Noise on 14th Street”?

“Dear PoPville,

There is a medium pitched humming noise that comes on every 5 or so minutes and stays on for 5 or more minutes, all day, every day. The noise has been going on since spring or so. We live on Belmont Street between 13 and 14 and this noise is a real nuisance to a point where it is bothering us and affecting our quality of life. The noise is coming through open windows and even through the bathroom vent. We have tried to track down the noise, but we can only go as far as maybe 14 and Florida and we can’t follow the noise anymore, and I think that is because we are walking on the ground level and the noise is coming from some roof top. Our best guess as to the origin of the noise is from an HVAC system on one of the buildings between 13 and 15 and south of Florida and north of U Street. I am sure we are not the only street being bothered by this annoying noise since I have heard the noise when I walk around the area mentioned above, so I hope to hear from you guys who live around this area who could point us to the building that is causing this noise so that we can notify them to fix it. Thank you!”

Probably too far away but over the weekend on the Columbia Heights listserv a resident wrote:

“For those of us who live in close proximity to the Giant grocery store at 1345 Park, or just frequent it, it’s a common occurrence to hear hours of a high pitched tone. We’ve asked over and over how to fix this (what we’ve been told is that it’s an alarm initiated by an open back door, though closing the door doesn’t seem to shut it off), but it keeps happening. Today it’s been going since about 9am. Does anyone have any contacts there with management or the owners of the building to figure out a strategy to fix this? It’s making us nuts!”
