messed up

mccormick sends us:

“Looks like someone vandalized the Black Lives Matter sign at 16th and Columbia. Literally whitewashed the “black” out.”

We are DC and we know that Black Lives Matter despite petty vandalism. In spite of petty vandalism. In fact I’m glad this opportunity has risen to reaffirm the fact that Black Lives Matter and the movement is real and not going anywhere despite the fractures and hurdles that still must be overcome.

“Dear PoPville,

This one is from Friday 2/10 at 1:28pm near 10th & Spring NW. He seems to be fairly inebriated (stairs are hard!) and misses the pretty obvious fact that we have camera in plain view but thinks ahead enough to wrap the box up in an extra coat to hide it as he walks away. The box contained a present from a family member that was largely sentimental and not really of significant monetary value so that’s tough news since we know the chances of recovery are super slim. I’ve reported it to MPD via the online reporting form anyhow and thought I’d send it your way, too….”

hawk pigeon

“Tuesday morning, this hawk slammed a pigeon into our dining room window with such force, it sounded like a basketball hit the window! Here’s a picture of it, along with one of the poor pigeon. Columbia Heights!”

Wonderland eulogized:

“As many of you know, Wonderland rarely rolls out a television, but we always have a Ms Pacman machine. It is with a heavy heart that we thank and bid farewell to Pacman’s creator, Masaya Nakamura. Tonight, Masaya, we salute you.”

safe stolen

A reader passes on from St. Stephen & the Incarnation Episcopal Church:

“In the early morning hours of Monday, January 30, someone broke into St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church and stole our safe. The safe contained the proceeds from a benefit concert for our Loaves and Fishes hot meals program. The program serves hundreds of meals each weekend for homeless and low-income people in Columbia Heights, and has for the past 50 years. Loaves and Fishes relies on donations to fund its operations and was counting on that money.

Video surveillance and other evidence suggests that this was a targeted, well-planned theft, not a crime of opportunity. (more…)

“Heard this from Florida and 10th. Probably 10 shots in rapid succession. Thought gunfire but assumed construction.”

From MPD:

Thanks to Emily for sending these awesome shots from Meridian Hill Park.

“I think its a juvenile red tailed hawk who was definitely snacking on something while I was watching.”
