From WMATA:
“Metro Transit Police detectives are seeking the public’s assistance to identify a person of interest in multiple incidents of voyeurism (upskirting) and at least one reported sexual abuse incident that occurred at Columbia Heights Metrorail Station on Wednesday evening.
Yesterday afternoon, an adult female contacted Transit Police via Metro’s online harassment reporting system. The victim reported that she was exiting Columbia Heights Station using the ascending escalator at approximately 7:40 p.m. Wednesday when she felt a hand up her skirt. The victim left the area, while the suspect returned into the station. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Our condo building, on the 1000 block of Harvard St NW, has been having an ongoing issue with package thefts.
Saturday afternoon, a man approached the back door to our building and rattled the door repeatedly. When we came into the hallway, to investigate the noise, he took off.
A few minutes later we saw him walking down the alley, now with several Amazon packages. When he noticed us watching he changed directions (it appeared he was originally going behind parked cars – I’m assuming to open the packages and ditch the boxes) and instead kept walking. (more…)

From Wonderland:
“Friends, come and join us on Sunday 6 August for the Wonderland Ballroom’s Lucky 13 Birthday Extravaganza. None of us at the bar understand how it is that city officials and humanity’s collective conscience have allowed us to remain open this long, but such are the mysteries of life, and we’re celebrating!
We’ll be running happy hour ALL DAY after brunch, and polite society is invited to come pay respects starting at 4:00 PM. Things get somewhat coarser starting around 7:00, and the earnest descent into something out of Dante begins around 8:00. Please plan accordingly. You’ll want to give yourself ample opportunity to clink glasses with your favorite bartenders, contemplate the bad choices of other people, swear oathes of fielty, and read the life advice on the bathroom walls.

“Dear PoPville,
Hey, my wife was on her way to work and stopped to grab a coffee at the starbucks in CH on 14th st when she came out and found someone had locked their bike to hers. She spoke with the cops and fire dept., all of whom understandably said they couldn’t do anything. Hopefully it is just a mistake and when I check on it after work I’ll be able to unlock hers and ride off with it (I’ll have her lock keys). Worst case–someone is trying to steal her bike, locking it down and waiting until later tonight to grab it. When I stop by after work–assuming the errant bike is still locked to hers–does anyone have any suggestions? Cops said to buy some bolt cutters at ACE and use those on the offending bike, taking whatever consequences may come… I’m game. Any other suggestions? If some jag off is trying to steal her bike, then I’m fine dismantling their lock to get to her bike. If some doofus locked their bike to hers by accident, well, losing a bike lock is a small price to pay for their error…”

11th Street, NW between Irving and Kenyon
Ed. Note: This is not the first time the police have become involved.
“Dear PoPville,
I am writing to inform and update you about an issue that occurred in Columbia Heights this past week – and ask for your support.
As many of you know, Latino and black residents of the community play soccer everyday after school or work at the field of Harriet Tubman Elementary School on 11th between Irving and Kenyon. Many of the residents have been playing there for 20+ years. Their kids come out of school and play on the playground at the field while their parents or siblings play soccer. My husband is one of the people who plays there.
This past Wednesday a pay-to-play sports league (Zog Sports) showed up and kicked them off because they paid $4000 for a permit to reserve the field Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for the next two months (the entire summer break). On Tuesdays there is already a Bocce league.
The community members bought the soccer goal nets and when they learned they would not be able to use their field until September went to remove the nets. DC Parks and Rec and the police we’re called and one guy was given a fine and 5 year ban from all DC Parks and Rec spaces – even though he had the receipt for the nets. The community was then told that if they play more than a 3-on-3 pick up game, they have to buy a permit to play on the field they have been playing on for over a decade. Mind you, this private league charges $90 a player in order to afford the permit and DC Parks and Rec is now asking community members who already pay for the field through our taxes to pay to play there even though they are not an organized league.
