“I just wanted to update you about the former City Sports space in Chinatown. Modell’s pulled out on picking up the lease left by City Sports. and now Comcast will take over by opening a Studio Xfinity store sometime this year.

“STUDIO XFINITY brings together the best TV and Internet technology in a new, one-of-a-kind store experience”

Now word on the exact opening date as they are still remodeling the space.”

FinishingSchool

From The Shakespeare Theatre Company:

“We’re working with director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar on a production of The Taming of the Shrew, which will include turning our lobbies into an Italian open-air style marketplace complete with a series of workshops and events we’re calling Padua Finishing School: a place for those who are never finished. The idea behind the workshops is to challenge traditional finishing school lessons and turn them into programming that would appeal to any life-long learner. We have some PoPville favorites leading the workshops (Hamiltonian Gallery, lots of regulars from The Lemon Bowl) as well as some out-of-town and lesser known artists. The complete list, which is still growing, can be found here: www.ShakespeareTheatre.org/Padua-Finishing-School (more…)

amorini
906 F Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I just walked by the Amorini Panini and someone said that it is closed “indefinitely.” Their website is down. Have you heard anything about this?”

Ed. Note: Facebook hasn’t been updated since Oct. 2015 and Twitter since February. Their phone number rings without going to voicemail. Amorini Panini opened their first brick and mortar spot back in 2010. They previously closed one on 18th Street downtown. Updates when more is known.

From MPD:

“Our efforts in the 900 block of G St., N.W. are really making a difference and I wanted to take a moment and give the community a brief update on our progress. Synthetic marijuana sales and use in this area are a huge concern. In this block over the past week Metropolitan Police Department officers have arrested 8 individuals for distribution of synthetic marijuana, and seized over 100 grams of the drug. Also during this period officers have arrested numerous individuals that congregate in this block for their outstanding arrest warrants. We plan to continue this type of enforcement and we plan on similar and even greater success, with a goal of eliminating any and all criminal activity in this block. I want to thank our community members that have assisting MPD with information on these criminals; Continued assistance and support from our community is essential in this type of problem. Thank you for your time and be safe.”

austin grill
750 E Street, NW

A reader reports:

“Looks like the Austin Grill in Penn Quarter is closed. Can’t say that it will be missed. I hadn’t been in several years but the food and service were consistently poor. Hopefully something great takes its place.”

Ed. Note: Austin Grill’s website still lists a Penn Quarter location though their phone just rings without going to voicemail. Anyone know what day they closed? I feel like they’ve been there forever, anyone remember what year they opened? Years ago before options were a plenty in PQ this was a pretty great happy hour spot. Updates when more is learned.

Cash’d Out
Cash’d Out is a San Diego-based band that channels Johnny Cash in about as close a manner to the real thing as it gets. Beyond critics having anointed Cash’d Out the “next best thing to Johnny Cash,” and the group having won six San Diego Music Awards for Best Tribute Band, and being the only tribute band endorsed by the official Johnny Cash web page, JohnnyCash.com, the real proof lies in what members of Cash’s inner circle have said. “Cindy Cash came to a show, we made her cry and she gave me a necklace with Johnny’s hair in a glass locket,” explains front man Douglas Benson. The group’s genuine love of Johnny Cash’s music and its universal appeal fans of all ages, and of virtually all musical genres, makes each Cash’d Out show a must-see event.”
