“Dear PoPville,

The 1000 block of 6th St, NE is almost equidistant between the new H St. Whole Foods and Union Market. It is the home to JO Wilson Elementary School Athletic Fields, a new Capitol Bikeshare dock and the recently opened Old City Market. It is also home to one vacant house that since the late spring has become a nearly daily meeting place for a few of the blocks residents and dozens of non-residents. This week, the notice in the photo was posted on the wall of the Old City Market. Why? Because most days, beginning in the early afternoon, people congregate either in front of this vacant house to party or spread out around the entire block.

The party often lasts well past midnight and has included rowhouse shaking bass, air compressor fueled car washes, frequent dice games, alcohol drinking, marijuana smoking, people making lean (a mix of soda and codeine cough syrup for those of you not in the know) and the occasional bbq (on Memorial weekend there were over 100 people and two grills going at 1am) not to mention the constant barrage of fireworks (legal and illegal) over July 4th weekend. Parking has become so difficult on the block for residents that most mornings the street is virtually empty because residents have chosen to park elsewhere, even when spots are available. A few of the people definitely live on the block (although none are the owners of the vacant home) but many of the license plates are from out of state.

The other night a large SUV with Florida plates was blocking the alley and people were just hanging out around it. (more…)

Just a few blocks south of the Library of Congress once stood the city’s largest and most prestigious hospital, founded in the urgent, needy days at the dawn of the Civil War. Because the modern Providence Hospital is now located in Brookland, it can be easy to forget how important this institution was for the rapidly growing central city in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From U.S. Capitol Police:

“The U.S. Capitol Police are continuing to investigate a suspicious vehicle located at Second Street and Independence Avenue SE. As a result of this investigation, the following road closures are in effect:

– Independence Avenue between Washington Avenue SW and Third Street SE

– Pennsylvania Avenue between Second and Third Streets SE

– Second Street between East Capitol and C Streets SE

– First Street between East Capitol Street and Independence Avenue SE

All staff and other personnel are directed to avoid this area until further notice.”

Man Shot in the Hand Just Before Midnight during robbery at 9th and D St, NE

“The First District is currently investigating an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon [Gun] that occurred at approximately 11:58pm on 7/16/17, in the 900 block of D Street NE. The complainant was walking eastbound on D Street NE when he was approached by three suspects. The suspects attempted to take the complainant’s backpack. During the robbery, the complainant sustained a gunshot wound to his hand. The suspects got into a dark-colored Toyota SUV and fled the area. The suspects are described as three black males, one of whom was wearing a gray sweatshirt.

If anyone observed the offense or would like to provide any information about this case, it is currently being investigated by the Detectives of the First District Detectives Unit who may be reached on (202) 299-2025.”
