“Dear PoPville,

I live in North Capitol Hill, and was walking my dogs this morning when I came across George Farris. He’s been fighting the city for years over the damage done to his historical house (built in 1862) by the city. His story will ring familiar to many DC residents, an impossible-to-navigate DC bureaucracy that can make our lives miserable. George is elderly, and disabled from his service in the Vietnam War. It kills me that anyone has to deal with this kind of thing, much less someone like him.

The city is threatening to break his door down and he’s chained himself to his front door to prevent it. I think your readers might find his story interesting. It all just breaks my heart.

He has a press release which I’ve attached (see below).”

Ed. Note: WJLA reported an emailed statement from DCRA:

“The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs has begun the process of securing the site in order to begin the necessary work to stabilize and repair it. We understand this process might be disruptive to the homeowner. But it is important that we make sure the property is safe and restore access to the public alley that serves the businesses and residents.” (more…)

The early word on Chiko is very, very good. This could be very cool too:

“CHIKO is the first restaurant from The Fried Rice Collective. Chefs Danny Lee and Scott Drewno pair modern cooking techniques with traditional Chinese and Korean flavors, while Drew Kim provides his passion for hospitality ensuring a unique fine casual dining experience. The After Dark Series is an idea born from years of collaborative efforts by Chefs Drewno and Lee. This series will offer an opportunity for both local and national chefs to have a creative space to experiment.

The CHIKO After Dark Series will offer an array of dishes created by CHIKO and the guest chefs, in addition to the rest of the CHIKO menu being available. Each After Dark popup will have a food theme, with the first featuring Thai cuisine with Chef Alex McCoy. Chef McCoy will be offering three dishes; Pad Mee Korat, Hoi Lai Nam Prik Pao, and Khao Soi. “Dear PoPville,

My wife and I are new to the Capitol Hill area and last night around 7:00 PM, our dog slipped out of our house near Lincoln Park. She was last seen near C-8th St, and we received a report of seeing her near Florida-8th later that evening.

She is a 10-lb mini Australian Shepherd with white and orange markings. Her name is Sasha, and she is EXTREMELY shy and will only come to my wife so if anyone sees her, please call Whitney at (434) 981-1218 ASAP with the location. If unable to reach her, please call Matt at (703) 587 5277.”

Thanks to Nick for sending:

“Ya have any news about the opening of Trader Joe’s opening at Eastern Market? Walked by last night and their signage is up!”

Mark Sussman reports:

“Spoke to the Eastern Market Trader Joe’s GM and they hope to open by the end of September. They put up the sign to attract hires”

Thanks to Justin for passing on from the Capitol Hill listserv:

“Mugging (attempted carjacking?) last night [Tuesday] on 600 block of E St, NE

A woman was tackled getting out of her car around 10:30 last night [Tuesday] on the 600 block of E St NE. Three perpetrators got her keys and seemed to be trying to take her car. She started screaming when they tackled her and a lot of people went outside. The perpetrators ran off and three neighbors chased after them. They cornered the perpetrators and were able to hand them over to the police. None of the guys who chased were injured. The cops were here for a while, but I didn’t hear how the woman was. The impression was that she was ok.

An unpleasant reminder to check your surroundings before getting into or out of your car, and be careful about carrying too many things when leaving your car. (I know I’m bad about grabbing all of my bags and gear and then fumbling for my key fob as I walk away).”

UPDATE from the owner:

“SkillZone is doing very, very well as a business with incredible month over month growth and hundreds of member families.

Due to demand from our members, our business model has expanded to focus on the social side of raising children. This includes letting families have a drink or two in the afternoons as they socialize with other parents and watch their children.”

Thanks to Alex for sending:

“Guess the second paid entry indoor children’s playground in a row, in this location, has failed.”

The liquor license application for SkillZone says:

“New private club with 70 seats and a Total Occupancy Load of 174. Club is for parents with young children. Establishment will hold “members-only” social events for parents and will serve wine and beer.”

Ed. Note: On a personal note I’ll go ahead and throw an AMEN.
