400 North Capitol Street, NW

Dear PoPville,

Taqueria Nacional, at 400 N Capitol St NW (ground floor of the Hall of States, behind Johnny’s Half-Shell) seems to have officially switched over to serving Johnny’s fare instead of the beloved tacos. The menu offerings changed earlier this week. Any word on when the new location of Taqueria Nacional on T St NW will open?

Below is a photo of their future 14th and T Street, NW location that I took last weekend. Progressing nicely but looks like the opening is probably still a few months away:

New Hawk and Dove signage sprouted back in November. Finally comes word (and photos) of their opening from the folks at Capitol Hill Corner:

The Hawk & Dove expects to open on Thursday, January 17, according to manager Jack McAuliffe. The restaurant was originally scheduled to open in February, but moved its debut up, in part, to take advantage of Inauguration traffic. McAuliffe, until recently the general manager at Boxcar, another Xavier Cerveras enterprise, said, “we want to bring a totally different experience to the block – try to do something new with a fun feel.”

The Hawk & Dove will be open at 4:30pm initially (including Inaugural Day) but will start serving lunch on Friday, January 25th.

Back in October 2010 we first learned that Nooshi Sushi and Tash House of Kabob would be coming to 524 8th Street, SE (previously home to Chateaux Animaux.) I was walking by last weekend checking out the new paint job when I noticed the front door was open so I was able to take a peek inside. The owners tell me that they should be open in about a week. Tash House of Kabob will be located on the first floor and Nooshi Sushi on the second floor. I only got a peek of the first floor but you can tell it’s gonna be pretty sweet:

Mi Vecindad restaurant opened up in the summer of 2010 at 12th and Pennsylvania Ave, SE near Frager’s Hardware store. Walking by over the weekend I see they’ve become il Capo di Capitol Hill Italian restaurant. I really enjoyed Mi Vecindad so I’m a bit sad to see them go but hopefully the new Italian joint is tasty.

I kinda liked how it’s in the shadow of the long closed Caffe Italiano sign next door. That building is now home to the B Spot juice bar, tea house and art gallery as well as Pizza-Iole on the first floor of 1123 Pennsylvania Ave, SE.
