Another big hit for longtime Capitol Hill bars – next up on the chopping block – Remingtons located at 639 Pennsylvania Ave, SE “for about 30 years or so”. Thanks to a reader for sending the tip, a call to Remingtons confirms their last day will be Monday at happy hour. I’m told the building sold about a year ago and will be renovated.

Remingtons follows the closures of long time spots – old Hawk n Dove, 18th Amendment, Li’l Pub and Pour House (at the end of April).

One of our first from the Revolutionary war – Nathanael Greene:

“Nathanael Greene was a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, known for his successful command in the Southern Campaign, forcing British general Charles Cornwallis to abandon the Carolinas and head for Virginia. When the war began, Greene was a militia private, the lowest rank possible; he emerged from the war with a reputation as George Washington’s most gifted and dependable officer. Many places in the United States are named for him. Greene suffered financial difficulties in the post-war years and died suddenly of sunstroke in 1786.

Nickname(s)
“The Savior of the South”

Another pretty spectacular transformation comes to Capitol Hill in the former 18th Amendment space. On April second Barrel’s blog said:

“Our whiskey all tucked in for the night just waiting to be drunk next week #brownwater”

Check out their “brownwater” menu here and their kitchen menu here.

Mark this as another incredible transformation (lots more photos here):

lost_yorkie

“Lost Yorkshire Terrier on Capitol Hill between A and 3rd NE and East Capitol. He was seen heading towards Lincoln Park. The fur on his head is golden brown and his body is gray/silver. He is a larger Yorkie (around 10-15 lbs). He is a very sweet rescue dog, and the tag on his collar has the number R14-0768. His name is Sigmund, but he doesn’t really answer to his name.”

If you think you’ve seen him please reply to this craigslist post.

Ed. Note: Columbia Height’s Filipino restaurant is aiming for a May/June opening on 11th Street.

From an email:

“Yana through her project Salo is creating Filipino popup meal a week in a every US state over 50 weeks. She is on a gastronomical diplomatic tour to introduce the US to filipino food and culture. You eat on banana leaves with your hand. It’s an epic project. Salo is coming to DC on April 6th [620 G Street, SE]. Part of the proceeds will be going to the Tsunami relief fund for the Philippines. I believe folks for the Filipino embassy will be at this one in DC. You can check out the menu and book seats here.

Uh oh or hallelujah depending on your perspective… Thanks to all who sent emails. From the Wall Street Journal:

“Baltimore-based Barrack’s Row Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Washington D.C., putting eating spots like Hawk ‘n’ Dove, Senart’s Oyster House and The Chesapeake Room into protection with it. Barrack’s Row, which is owned by a group of investors, said it has between $1 million and $10 million in debt.”

The new Hawk n Dove opened in Jan. 2013. Senart’s Oyster House opened at 520 8th St SE on Barracks Row in 2011 and The Chesapeake Room opened at 501 8th Street, SE also on Barracks Row back in 2010. I believe this group also owns Lola’s, Molly Malone’s Pacifico, and The Box Car Tavern.

results_gym

If true this is going to devastate many fit folks. A reader with a very good scuttlebutt track record (pun intended) sends the sad word that they hear Results on Capitol Hill will soon be sold. It’s not clear if it will become another gym or what but in January we learned that the downtown Results Gym was becoming an LA Fitness. We’ll see if they or another gym take over the Capitol Hill space at 315 G Street, SE.

UPDATE from Results:

“We expected rumors to surface when we sold the Downtown location to LA Fitness. We have had little luck with that location over the years… Being that it was in the middle of Downtown, pretty inconvenient to residents, it was more of a “daily lunch-time crowd” environment. To keep things brief, our Capitol Hill location has always been a bit more successful, leaving us no choice but to fund the struggling locations just to keep them open… We certainly tried to make Downtown work, but the opportunity quickly presented itself to avoid 3 more years in a lease and take LA Fitness up on their offer.

Needless to say, we can start focusing all of our finances on one location. Being able to improve the facility and equipment has been one of the most difficult tasks with the financial burdens of other locations in the past, on-top of Results always offering convenient month-month plans with no annual contracts. Proud to say, new equipment and flooring are arriving little by little and bringing quality back to this immense facility

We are having some community events this summer, we will also be offering some community-based free fitcamps as well. We are extremely excited about our Olympic platforms, our redesign of our 3rd floor and our Life Fitness Synergy 360 coming soon!”

I really like the walkway on this one from Capitol Hill:

And bonus transom next door – 637 1/2 – I rarely see 1/2 in old school transoms.  Nice.

The former Tabula Rasa space is set to become a Capital Teas tea bar and boutique:

Further down the row, Disrtict Doughnut’s buildout is starting to take shape:

And finally – Capitol Hill Sporting – is having a liquidation sale and going out of business. Back in 2010 there were plans to convert this space into a bar and grill.
