In early February we learned that next door neighbors, Roses Luxury, would be opening a new restaurant in the Homebody space on Barracks Row. I stopped in to ask when they were closing and was told they’ll be open until summer. Also they’re looking for new space. Updates when a final date is known and a new space is found. If you’re not familiar with the shop you can see Homebody’s website here. Last we spoke there was a lot of love/hate for them. Mark me in the love column:

From a press release (photos below courtesy Stanton & Greene):

“Capitol Hill neighborhood newcomer Stanton & Greene has just announced its opening this week with three nights of discounted “previews,” inviting neighbors from across the District and beyond to escape to the golden age of cocktails and American classics in an historic, gorgeously renovated Capitol Hill landmark at 319 Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

StantonGreene-Bar

The Hill’s newest destination for classic cocktails will begin three nights of limited preview services on Monday, March 9 as the distinctly American bar and brasserie anticipates its full opening on Thursday, March 12 with a complete menu.

StantonGreene-Loft

Spanning three floors of a meticulously restored building just two blocks from the US Capitol and Supreme Court, Stanton & Greene will evoke the easy elegance of the Capital city’s bars of the early to mid 20th century. The ground floor is home to a traditional American bar and brasserie with period details from the 1930’s and 1940’s, and the second floor ‘loft’ features a soaring 16-foot space centered with an Art-Deco bar hand-carved from American ash, and three massive windows overlooking historic Pennsylvania Avenue.

StantonGreene-LoftBar

Brought to life from partners and Capitol Hill restaurant owners (Sonoma Restaurant & Wine Bar, Beuchert’s Saloon) August Paro, Eli Hengst and Jared Rager, Stanton & Greene will serve a refined selection of unique and classic craft cocktails, and creative, updated interpretations of foods evocative of early- to mid-20th century America. So sad. The Washington Post reported:

“Mr. Cymrot died Nov. 29 at a Washington hospital of injuries suffered in a Nov. 19 traffic accident, according to his wife. He was walking near the intersection of 4th and East Capitol Streets when he was hit by a truck. Details of the accident are under investigation by D.C. police. Mr. Cymrot was 72.”

Ed. Note: In July we posted a Dear PoPville – Dangerous dog in Cap Hill attacked toddler and my dog but Animal Control not doing anything.

“I’m finally getting to testify about my dog bite case at an upcoming hearing, but because the DC Department of Health (DOH) never followed up with any of previous attacks, my upcoming hearing is just to determine if the sheepdog is “Potentially Dangerous” rather than “Dangerous”. A Potentially Dangerous dog just has to be on a 4 ft leash, registered with the city, neutered, things like that. Which is better than nothing. But the problem is, even if my hearing succeeds and this dog is determined to be “Potentially Dangerous”, then he has one more opportunity to attack someone before any real restrictions will be placed on the owner (like having to muzzle her dog and notifying the authorities if he attacks someone again).

So, because the city failed to do anything in all of the previous bite cases, we have to treat my case as if it were the first time this dog has ever bitten anyone, even though the city provided me with a document via FOIA that shows this sheepdog has bitten 2 people (!) and 2 dogs (including my case on 12/15/2013) in 4 separate attacks in the past. Furthermore, the owner’s other dog, a brown standard poodle, also attacked a dog in 2010. So in the last 5 years, this woman has allowed her dogs to attack others 5 separate times (there was a 6th incident in which her sheepdog was apparently the victim according to the document, so I’m not counting that one). I redacted private info, labeled myself as Ms. A and the owner of the aggressive dogs as Ms. B in the descriptions, and put red arrows at the relevant parts of the document.

My favorite line from this document is where, after listing some of the previous attacks by this woman’s dogs, DOH writes, “Recommendation: I recommend closing out the case and informing Ms. [A] there’s no probable cause to start a potentially dangerous dog investigation on Arbor [the sheepdog]. Arbor has not bitten a person or dog this year and no menacing reports has not been reported to DCACC as of date.”

Huzzah! Thanks to lorie shaull who took these great shots:

“The sledding news from Capitol Hill grounds was that there may have been more media covering the event than actual sledders. CNN, ABC7, Washington Post, Reuters, and many more were all in attendance. When I talked briefly to the Capitol Police they weren’t interfering and said they were there to make sure nobody got hurt; they did mention two reporters had fallen and been hurt. When I left, all sledders seemed happy and uninjured–no arrests were made.”

Since the petition and EHN’s efforts failed:

“Despite efforts, the sled ban has not been waived for this weekend. But if you are up for a little civil disobedience, a sled-in is planned for today at 1pm. West lawn of the Capitol. Come armed with sleds!
