From MPD:

At about 6:45 this morning, Friday, November 2, police were called to a home in the 3500 block of 17th St., NE, for a possible assault. When officers arrived, one of our 5D officers was attacked by a suspect with a knife. The officer was assaulted, and in defending himself shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

The officer received several stab wounds. He has been released from the hospital and is doing well.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers that have arrived at 5D this morning.

For this who live in/near Brookland:

The friars at the Franciscan Monastery invite their Brookland neighbors and their friends to bring their pets to the monastery Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. for the annual Blessing of the Animals. The friars traditionally bless pets (large and small are welcome) on or near the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, who was known for his life of simplicity and peace. Hope to see folks there! The monastery is located at 1400 Quincy Street, NE.

For those that live near the National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave, NW):

Washington National Cathedral continues its annual tradition of blessing animals on October 7, 2012, in honor of the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, frequently preached to them in his ministry. The Cathedral will welcome special guests Lois Wye from the Washington Animal Rescue League, Lisa LaFontaine, President of Washington Humane Society and Victoria Strang from the Humane Society of the United States.

“The blessing of the animals is always a heartwarming and fun event for the community,” said Cathedral spokesman Richard Weinberg. “For many people a pet is a member of the family, and bringing a pet to church for a blessing is a unique opportunity that allows us to engage with our faith in a new and meaningful way. We are proud to carry on this tradition of blessing all members of God’s creation.”

All pets and their caretakers are invited to attend and participate. The Animal Rescue League will have a pet adoption van on site and the Humane Society will have some animals available for adoption for those looking to provide a home for an animal in need.

When: Sunday, October 7, at 2:30 pm EDT
Where: Walker Court on the West Front of the Cathedral along Wisconsin Ave.

901 Monroe St, NE

Dear PoPville,

Did you know that Col Brooks’ Tavern is closing it’s doors after 32 years on Friday (tonight)? We were there this week and while they are running out of beers, it’s been part of the neighborhood where everyone knows your name. Soon, it will be a hole in the ground. Alas, but that’s the circle of (development) iife.

The site is slated to become the 901 Monroe Street project:

“RETAIL: 13,000 square feet. Five retailers including a restaurant
APARTMENTS: 212 rental units
PARKING: 150 parking spaces
BIKE SPACES: 66 Bike spaces
ZIPCAR: 2 Zipcar spaces”

A buddy of mine who went to the law school at Catholic University was a big fan and I’d meet for drinks there from time to time but sadly, as a non regular, my deepest memory is the horrible triple murder that occurred in 2003. So sad.

Wishing all those who were apart of Colonel Brooks Tavern the best of luck in the future. I’ve heard whispers that they could reopen in the new space but I’ve never seen that confirmed. Any fans of Colonel Brooks Tavern?

You can find more info about the coming development here.

A reader sends the following report from the CUA Department of Public Safety:

On Monday, August 27, 2012, at 11:12 p.m., a Catholic University student was robbed and assaulted in the 700 block of Lawrence Street, N.E. After the victim exited her vehicle, the suspect approached the victim from behind, grabbed her by the neck and slammed her head against the vehicle. When the victim fell to the ground, the suspect continued the assault, and snatched her cell phone and car keys. The suspect entered the victim’s vehicle, removed cash and her debit card.

The suspect was last seen running towards the Brookland/CUA Metro station. The Metropolitan Police Department and Emergency Medical Services were notified.

The suspect was described as a black male; 5’7”; average build; mid-twenties; wearing a black sweatshirt; jean shorts; Timberland boots and gloves.

The CUA Department of Public Safety reminds students, faculty, staff, and visitors to follow these safety precautions:

* Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
* Notice persons approaching you or walking behind you.
* Trust your instincts. If a situation does not feel right, take protective action.
* Avoid alleys, short cuts and vacant lots. Stick to well lit, busy streets.
* Walk in groups or with a companion as often as possible.

3514 12th Street, NE

Huge news for Brookland residents – the owners of three rock solid spots on U St and H St are combining forces to open a new bar, grill and coffee lounge in Brookland. This could be the biggest thing to hit Brookland since the Pope visited The Basilica. The owners of The Pug, 1234 H St, NE – Tony T; Solly’s, 11th and U St, NW – John Solomon; and Sova – 1359 H St, NE – Frank Hankins are coming to the former Library space at 3514 12th St, NE near the Brookland metro:

I spoke with Pug owner and Brookland resident Tony T who explains their vision for the space:

We are putting together a family friendly, neighborhood bar and grill. The coffee element that Frank brings is also an integral part of what we are doing.

I live just a few blocks away, so I’m looking to make a place where I can take the kids to dinner as well as a place the softball team can come for a few pitchers after a game. the neighborhood bar feel is very important, but with the chef we’re bringing on board, the menu is going to be much broader than hot dogs and 13th street meats off of the Pug’s grill. Although both may be included to keep the kids happy.

The long and short of it is, we want a place to eat and drink that caters to the families and folks who have been in Brookland for years, as well as a place for the newer folks.

Coffee in the morning and beer at night – sweet!

They are still finalizing their liquor license transfer and some other logistics so realistically standby for an Autumn opening. More details on the menu (and the name of the place!) as they get closer to opening.
