“Dear PoP,

I live across the street from 734 Longfellow St NW and I came home about 8:00pm and heard the shots and I didn’t think much of it but by the time I got in the house MPD and DCFD were on the scene . I witnessed them remove a man about 40 to 50 yrs old and they were performing CPR but he look like he was gone. They were not letting residents into the building.”

@dcfireems confirms a shooting take place on the 700 block of Longfellow St, NW.

Last week’s edition of Good Deal or Not Revisited (GDoN-R) took a look at a fully renovated rowhouse in a downtown urban neighborhood in the low $300,000. price range. This week, we head north, looking at another renovated property in a similar price range. The Prince tagged this neighborhood as Brightwood in the Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post. I’m going to say it’s a little east for Brightwood and will go with South Takoma DC.

This property was purchased in May in its “needs work” state for $190,000. The folks who bought it travel under the name “The Everyday Home Buyers LLC”, which I thought was a good name for a group that does modest but clean rehabs. They installed central air but left the radiators, which home inspectors generally seem to appreciate.

Well this is certainly, uh, an interesting choice of names… The liquor application license says:

“New cocktail bar lounge with billiard table. Salad and sandwiches will be served, no entertainment. Seating capacity is 8. Total occupancy load is 40.”

Seating capacity is 8 but no entertainment (except for a billiard table)? Sounds like a legit tavern. Could be interesting.

The Craigslist ad says:

“Your new address is 737 Longfellow St NW! This apartment is in a small well managed building. Bright apartment with plenty of windows and airflow. This apartment home has easy access to metro bus lines that run all over the city. It is close to Walter Reed, Howard U and Hospital, Silver Spring, Columbia Heights, and much more. Close proximity to grocery stores, pharmacies, and other shopping conveniences. Please contact UIP Leasing to set an appointment to view this fantastic apartment.”

Does $895 sound reasonable for this 1 bed/1 bath? I chose this one (though it is a bit further north then requested) because I though it might work for the following reader who asks:

“I’m looking for a new place to live in Petworth within the rhombus defined by:

Between and Taylor and Farragut
Between Georgia and New Hampshire

Can’t afford more than $900/month incl. utilities and I come with a quiet/tidy/peaceful/herbivorous 5-year old son.

We’re game for apartments—semi-slummy to well manicured, group homes, communes, or (like our current place) rooms in someone’s house.”

Anyone have suggestions for this reader?

I spoke with some really nice firefighters who said that they believe the Papa Johns located at 5764 Georgia Ave, NW will be opening around Oct. 1st. Though they also said that there hadn’t been much movement lately on the Washington Deli nearby, on Georgia Ave just south of Missouri, but when I peeked in the window it seemed really close to being completed.

I say coming back in the title because of course the legendary Posins Deli used to be located nearby. Pictures from the heritage trail sign and now after the jump. (more…)

Unfortunately it is easy to overlook these incidents because they weren’t widely reported (as fortunately nobody was killed) but let’s not pretend that they didn’t happen. Because the people that live on these blocks can’t pretend it didn’t happen.

The flier says:

You can find more info here and more photos here.

It is rare that two different readers request the same house for a GDoN post. That happened for this one – What do you think of the renovations? Do you think $339,700 for this 4 bed/3.5 bath is priced right?

The groundbreaking for this project, located at 1330 Missouri Avenue NW, will be this Tues. From a press release:

“VIDA Senior Centers invite you to join Mayor Adrian Fenty, Angel Luis Irene of VIDA Senior Centers, representatives from City First Bank of DC, city officials, friends and neighbors at the groundbreaking for the construction of 36 units of Affordable Housing for Seniors and a new Senior Service Center at the future home of the VIDA Senior Residences at Brightwood located at 1330 Missouri Avenue NW in Brightwood (between 13th and 14th on the south side of Missouri Avenue)”.

This sounds interesting. From a press release:

“Join the National Park Service and our partners for a fun day at Fort Stevens. Learn how the brave soldiers of Washington, D.C. valiantly defended the Union capital from occupation and how medical practices evolved throughout the war.

The Battle of Fort Stevens was the only battle to occur in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War and the only time a sitting president came under enemy fire. The actual fighting took place on July 11th and 12th, 1864. Not only did the defenses serve their purpose well by deterring Confederate attack on the capital, but they impacted the city culturally, socially, and politically. Further, the battle was not limited to the current Fort Stevens site. Confederate General Jubal Early’s invading troops were staged on the grounds of what is today Walter Reed Army Medical Center. With the proposed closing of Walter Reed, participants will explore this previously overlooked aspect of the Fort Stevens story.”

WBJ’s Michael Neibauer has a great report on 14th St development plans:

District planners are eyeing a 1.8-mile stretch of 14th Street NW for a makeover, one that may usher in a streetcar line, a redeveloped Metro bus garage and a more diverse commercial lineup along a corridor often overshadowed by Columbia Heights just to the south.

Running north from Spring Road to Madison Street, the Central 14th Street corridor drives through several middle-income communities, including Petworth, 16th Street Heights, Brightwood Park and Crestwood. Minority-owned storefronts, generally neighborhood-serving retail, dot the strip. A century-old Metro bus garage, which D.C. government planners deem “potentially historic,” comprises two blocks between 14th Street and Iowa Avenue.
