“Dear PoP,

Day and night, raw sewage seeps from a recently demolished building into an alley on the 800 block of Kennedy Street, NW, in Brightwood Park, causing the foulest stench to fill the air. This has been occurring nonstop since JANUARY. The unmistakable smell of sewage can be smelled all the way to 9th and Kennedy. While Council-member Bowser’s office has been helpful in trying to pressure the city to rectify this problem, it has gone on for far too long. Exposure to raw sewage has health risks that the city has not addressed with so much as a sign. I witness children and adults walk through this spill every day, not knowing what it is.

DCMud reported in January 2009 that 809 Kennedy NW was set for demolition: http://dcmud.blogspot.com/2009/01/brightwood-tenement-set-for-demolition.html

New System Demolition and Excavation was reported to carry out the demolition.

New System Demolition and Excavation said that the owner of the building had been fined and it was their responsibility to clean and fix the issue — the owners did not pay NSDE what they are owed, so the city (DCRA) will be rolling out some sort of bidding process to get contractors to complete the work.

I spoke to the owners of several Kennedy Street businesses on Tuesday, March 24. One in particular said that his business had been damaged by fewer customers coming in to his restaurant due to the stench adjacent to his establishment. There is also a nagging feeling that our community is being ignored because it has a largely Spanish speaking, immigrant population.

On Wednesday, March 24, I made phone calls to the DC Department of the Environment, where I was referred to Bob Emwanta, and later to Sylvester Mode (pronounced moe-DAY) where I left a message.

I then made a phone call to Chris Davis at the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, who said that he was currently awaiting a response from WASA on the matter. He, too, had experienced the stench first-hand after his office conducted “Operation Fix-It” in the community. I asked him to keep Robert Idlett from my councilwoman’s office in the loop as well.

And still the stench fills our block.”

Wow, this is completely unacceptable. Which agency should be pressured to get this fixed immediately?

MPD confirms the shooting and writes:

“…These acts of violence are being actively investigated and at this time do not appear to be random acts.

No one knows your neighborhood better than you do. If you see a vehicle, a person or anything that seems to stand out and is suspicious please make us aware. Even though many times what may seem like suspicious activity may turn out to be nothing we would much rather error on the side of caution and send a unit out to check it out. So please do not hesitate to call us. We would be more than happy to assist. And if you have and information about the recent events in the neighborhood regardless of how insignificant it may seem, please contact a member of the Fourth District or you can remain anonymous by calling 1-888-919-CRIME or 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50-411.”

“Dear PoP,

I’m a long-time Arlingtonian who’s got a contract on a house in Brightwood. I assume some of your readers live in that neighborhood, and I’d love to see some discussion of their likes/dislikes, and general quality-of-life issues. Are there any community groups that should I look into joining in order to have some say in the improvement of the neighborhood’s quality of life?”

You can find some info from the Brightwood Community Association here. There was also a bit of discussion about Brightwood back in August here when we discussed a GDoN. Any readers who live in Brightwood want to weigh in here?

“Dear PoP,

Have you heard about the shooting in this area of Brightwood last night? From what I’ve heard, a young man was shot in the head and killed right on the street. Have only seen one email from the MPD regarding this incident but a lot of residents are really upset. Complaints about this block and the gang/crew that hangs out on it have been many, but little has been done.”

I also only saw a few emails from MPD:

Nov. 29, 1:08am
“4d units are on the scene of a shooting in the 600 block of Longfellow Street, NW. An adult male was shot and transported to a local hospital. If anyone has information concerning this incident, please call 202-727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIMe.”

Nov 29, 9:31 PM
“The detectives are still interviewing witnesses and the motive for the shooting is unclear at this time. The victim is in grave condition at a local hospital.”

Nov 29, 9:34 PM
“We have received confirmation that the victim of the shooting has succumbed as a result of his injuries.”

I found this up in Brightwood. I respect the folks who put this out there because it must be a pain to empty. But I still think it’s sad that it is necessary, otherwise folks would just litter.

On a related matter, I was sitting on my porch drinking a beer with a neighbor when a car pulled up and was idling next to my house. The woman driving the car unwrapped a cd cover, opened her door and just threw the garbage on the street. Obviously this isn’t a mortal sin but it still really bothered me. I was staring at the car in disbelief. I was debating whether to knock on her window or do nothing. In the end I simply walked over very deliberately and picked up the trash and sorta shook it before putting it in my pocket. I’m a firm believer of picking battles and I think I was able to make my point without making a scene. Still very frustrating though…

More info and photos found here.

Well, I think there is no question that this is a good looking condo. The question is how far north are you willing to live? Do you like the style of this condo? I gotta say I’ve never seen a condo for this price look this good. Do you think $319,000 sounds reasonable?

The flier says:

“Beautiful Tudor-style brick rowhouse, move-in condition. 3br, 2.5 baths, skylights, CAC, hardwood floors, garage parking w/ remote, working fireplace, large rooms. Walk to Takoma Metro/shops. House has been very well maintained and sits on a charming street in Brightwood, blocks to Rock Creek Park, downtown, Walter Reed.”

More info and a virtual tour found here.

I’ve always been curious about these brick rowhouses. This one seems to have lots of nice original details. I guess my only complaint is that the kitchen looks like it could use some updating. But otherwise the house looks pretty fresh. Do you think $424,900 sounds reasonable?

Thanks to the many readers who sent me the news. After only a few months being open we learned that Meridian restaurant closed back in early June. For the folks up in North Country I’m happy to let you know about Brightwood Bistro located at 5832 Georgia Ave. I stopped by and was able to grab a menu and talk to some folks doing prep work. First of all the new Bistro is opening up on Tuesday. Most of the decor will stay the same. The new executive chef is named Michael Walters. Call 202-545-5015 for reservations. Currently hours will be 5-11pm. A sample from the menu:

Shrimp Noodle Soup $8, Brightwood Mussels $7, Rittenhouse wings $10, The Brightwood Burger $15, Missouri Avenue Hotdog $8, (all sandwiches come with garlic fries), Pan roasted rockfish $18, The georgia avenue ribeye $24, Its Shrimp N Grits $19 (There are a number of other choices as well). I like the local names but I’m a little concerned that the price point may be too high.

Hard to say without sampling the goods but do you guys think the Bistro will be successful at this location when Meridian was unable? What do you think they’ll need to do to be successful?

They have a nice photo and the menu selections. An excerpt:

“When English advertised the job openings in the Washington Post Express, he received more than 400 applications; he estimates that at least half came from Brightwood residents. He said the community has supported him since he started work on the building last summer. English says one server who lives nearby told him, “I never thought I’d be working at a restaurant like this around the corner from my house.””
