drums
600 Rhode Island Avenue, NE

“Dear PoPville,

I was driving on Rhode Island Ave yesterday and saw some African drums on the side of the road. Curious, I parked and walked in the the store, and it was AWESOME. Essentially, ‘Hand on Drums’ is a pop-up inside a community space headed by these guys from Ghana who sell drums, give drum classes, and hold workshops. But more importantly, they support multiple organizations, notably ‘The Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project’ and ‘Drumming up From Poverty’, which help to keep kids off the streets and provides young men and women with craftsman jobs.

Anyways, I probably spent 45mns with them and they are so nice, genuine, and trying to make a difference with their pop-up.

Address is 600 Rhode Island Avenue NE, across the street from the Autozone.”

Well this is huge. From a press release:

“MidCity, one of Washington, DC’s most respected and experienced developers and property owners, has launched a new name and dynamic new website — www.riadc.com — for its ambitious 20-acre mixed-use development designed to be the future centerpiece of the Rhode Island Avenue community. The website moves far beyond a branding exercise and includes candid FAQ’s, phase-by-phase diagrams, master plan and block plan renderings and details of the meticulous and innovative approach being employed by MidCity and architect and planner, Perkins Eastman. MidCity has retained interdisciplinary and strategy collective, Streetsense, for branding, communications and retail consulting for the project.

With initial demolition of the Brentwood Village shopping center scheduled for late 2016 and groundbreaking on the first phase of this inclusive, community-design driven neighborhood set for late 2017, the RIA website and brand set the stage for the next phases of development – an array of residences, an inviting new town center, new connective streets, local shops and retailers and pedestrian promenades and green spaces. “Dear PoPville,

[TL;DR: This post office is a mess. Between refusing to not allow us to sign for deliveries, taking weeks to redeliver packages that are signed for, packages that are said to have been delivered but never arrive, and fighting endlessly against insurance claims for those packages, we are extremely frustrated with this post office. It is where all packages in DC deliver from, so dealing with other offices will only result in being directed back to Brentwood. I am seriously considering public, collected action of customers. We can’t be the only people experiencing these issues, judging from the Google reviews for this post office and the remarks made by the national customer service representatives.]

Since moving to DC, my girlfriend and I have had more issues with USPS than we can recall or count, so you will have to excuse me if some of my details are limited or if I do not recall all of them entirely. I can, however, look back at my insurance claims and see how many have been filed. All but one have been awarded, and that is one I am currently fighting to get awarded. My USPS claim page suggests I have filed nine insurance claims since moving to DC. These are only packages that I paid to have mailed to me using my account; packages I have reported as undelivered that were paid for by the sender account for maybe twice as many. I am in the second appeals on the most expensive claim, which ironically is an office in DC. I have called once a day for a week and, despite the voicemail saying they will respond within 24 hours, I have never heard back. This is a similar issue I have with the Brentwood post office entirely (the consumer advocate office is in the same building but a different office, and even they don’t communicate with eachother). It’s the Carlos Rosario School’s Sonia Gutierrez Campus! From an email:

“On Friday, June 5th we’ll be having a street naming celebration at the Sonia Gutierrez Campus at 5th and V street NE. I think a lot of people (especially those walking on the Metropolitan Branch Trail) might not know what the building is and what we do. It would be great to spread the word through Popville.

On Friday, in addition to remarks from the mayor and city councilmembers, the event will also include the unveiling of the street sign, food prepared by culinary arts students, student performances and student-led tours. It should be a good party complete with a Mariachi band, traditional Ethiopian dancers and good food prepared by our students.”

On June 5th the Carlos Rosario School will host a street naming ceremony and celebration to honor the national award-winning Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School that has transformed the lives of over 70,000 Latinos and other immigrants for the past four decades.

The D.C. Council unanimously voted to commemoratively name the 500 block of V Street NE as Sonia Gutierrez Campus Way. The naming ceremony will take place in front of the Sonia Gutierrez Campus in recognition of the legacy and impact of Sonia Gutierrez, the Carlos Rosario School’s founder and innovative educator, for her 43 years of service to the Latino and immigrant communities of Washington, DC.

This is the first time in Washington, DC history that a street is named in honor of a Latina!

What: Street Naming Ceremony and Reception to include student-led entertainment and tours as well as food prepared by Carlos Rosario culinary arts career training students

Who: Key attendees include city councilmembers, key community leaders, school leaders, and members of the greater DC region’s immigrant communities including adult immigrant students and graduates
When: June 5, 2015 from 10:30am to 1pm
