“Dear PoPville,
I know many readers have been following the city-wide conversation about making our streets safer to prevent the kinds of senseless pedestrian and cyclist deaths we’ve been even more attentive to since the tragic deaths of Dave Salovesh and Abdul Seck.
One of the places we have a chance to make some real improvements right now is Bloomingdale. Already this year drivers have killed two pedestrians on North Capitol Street, and residents are nervous it’s only a matter of time before something similar happens on the pedestrian-heavy 1st Street NW. Despite being a residential road, commuting cars cut through and speed through the stop signs to catch the lights at the intersections of 1st and Florida and 1st and Rhode Island. Just last week covered a violent crash right in this area on Tuesday that spilled onto the sidewalk. (more…)

“feels newsworthy given events of the last week that there’s another significant crash just now that ended up on the sidewalk at the corner of Florida / R NW. Not sure what happened but looks like no injuries.” (more…)

Yesterday morning I posted about the prolonged closure of CRISP. In a stroke of coincidence and good fortune Eater got some more details later that afternoon:
“Bloomingdale’s Fried Chicken Place Is Turning Into an Italian Bar With Board Games
Crisp, the Bloomingdale bar and restaurant known for its Nashville hot wings and chicken sandwiches, is scratching its longtime poultry theme. New owners of the two-story property plan to flip it into a new bar called Hopscotch.”
Apropos of nothing, as it is Friday post Mueller and I am dragging, allow me to share one of my favorite tv commercials from my youth, which my friends and I would mimic for hours. (more…)

UPDATE: An Italian Bar to be called Hopscotch is coming.
“Dear PoPville,
Getting ready to move to Bloomingdale and was excited to be close to Crisp as I enjoyed my meal there last time I went but looks like they may have shut down for good? According to their last twitter post in March they closed for renovations for what was supposed to be 4 days but now their website’s down. Any word?”
On March 8th they wrote:
“We will be closing Crisp Bar and Kitchen this weekend to renovate and clean the kitchen. We will reopen next Tuesday the 12th at normal operating hours. We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope to see you all soon!”
Anyone know if they are down for the count?

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to both let you know and ask for your help in regards to a permit for a pop-up that has somehow been granted for 70 W Street NW, after our neighborhood has fought so hard to obtain a historic district designation. It is my neighborhood’s understanding that pop-ups and any other major alterations to the facade of the homes here are illegal, and would require the permission of the historic district in order to proceed. From an email:
“The Pub & The People (Corner of N Capitol St & R St NW) has started doing free, live, local music!
We’ve been working with the badass Ben Tufts (a DC musician that has been involved for decades in the local music scene) and 7DrumCity to put together really great one/two person acts here at The Pub. We even learned how to do sound engineering, so we can make it sound really really nice.
Here is the schedule for the this month – we will be doing it every Sunday and Tuesday from 6-8pm: (more…)
