“The 11th Street Bridge Park, a partnership between the local non-profit Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR) and the District government, today announced $3.5M in capital campaign gifts from the Reveda Foundation of the Logan Family and Bloomberg Philanthropies to be recognized at the park’s River Amphitheater and Bloomberg Trail. Located on the piers of the former 11th street bridge spanning the Anacostia River, D.C.’s first elevated public park will connect two long-divided communities providing a new venue for healthy recreation, environmental education and the arts. “Today, as she kicked off DMV Black Restaurant Week, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced nearly $9 million in grants through the Food Access Fund to provide funding to food businesses to open new locations in Wards 7 and 8. Mayor Bowser included the $58 million initiative in her Fair Shot Budget with the goal of eradicating food deserts and creating employment opportunities and economic vibrancy.
“We have an incredible amount of entrepreneurial talent and creativity in DC, especially in our restaurant and foodservice industries – it’s just not equally distributed or equally funded. The Food Access Grants are going to change that,” said Mayor Bowser. “With this $58 million fund, we can bring DC favorites like HalfSmoke that currently operate in some of our most popular corridors on the west side of the city and support them in opening new locations in Wards 7 and 8. We can also support popular spots that are already in Wards 7 and 8, like MLK Deli, and make sure they have the resources necessary to expand and reach more Washingtonians. We already know that we have residents in every part of our city who are eager to support local businesses; the Food Access Grants are not only delivering more food options to Wards 7 and 8, they’re delivering new opportunities to stay local and shop local.”

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Acting Director Everett Lott cut the ribbon on the new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. They were joined by federal and local officials including Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, as well as descendants of the bridge’s namesake and guests of the family.
“The new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is a fitting tribute to an iconic Washingtonian, a forefather of Black excellence who we continue to emulate and who helped build Washington, DC into the city we are today. This project was never just about getting people from Point A to Point B, it was about building a more connected DC – connecting Ward 8 and Ward 6, connecting residents to jobs and prosperity, and connecting our entire community to the future of multi-modal transportation,” said Mayor Bowser. “Today, we celebrate all the federal, regional, and local partners who helped get us here, including our champions in Congress, Congresswoman Norton and Majority Leader Hoyer, the Douglass family, and the teams at the District Department of Transportation and South Capitol Bridge Builders.”
The two-day celebration of the new bridge kicked off on Labor Day with a 5K attended by approximately 4,000 people. It was immediately followed by a community day on the bridge deck with music, food, and a pop-up vaccination site. (more…)

The super nice weather today is inspiring me to look into more outdoorsy activities. I have a pair of roller skates I haven’t used in about a year or so and was wondering if you had any recommendations of where to skate around the District? The National Mall is an obvious first choice but I wanted to see if anybody had any other spots they’d recommend.”
