I think the sidewalk/garden improvement at Calvert and Adams Mill Road came out really well (in Adams Morgan).

“Dear PoP,
I’m surprised I didn’t see a post from you yet on what happened last night. (Although I know you don’t post on weekends regularly). I was walking home around midnight and there were 12-13 cop cars around the block of 14th street between Columbia and Irving. I walked up to a group of people that actually included Councilmember Graham. A cop explained what was going on, and when I asked someone what he said, I heard that someone was shot and killed.
This morning, I checked washingtonpost.com and found additional details.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/
“In Columbia Heights, a 19-year-old man was shot to death last night in the heart of the neighborhood’s developing retail and residential district, D.C. police said.
The area was brimming with people on a warm and pleasant night when the shooting occurred about 11 p.m. in the 3000 block of 14th Street NW, near the busy intersection of 14th Street and Columbia Road. The burst of as many as six shots sent people racing in all directions, some of them darting into traffic in their efforts to flee, according to witnesses.
Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) said he believed that the killing might have represented “gang retribution.”
The victim, who was not identified immediately, was hit in the head and fell in front of an apartment house doorway.”
And from Ontarioroader’s comment in Rant and/or Revels:
“Yep, a 19 y/o shot in the head and killed at 14th and columbia. There was also a gunfight in Adams morgan at kalorama and Champlain. 2 MPD officers shot and injured, but it sounds like they were able to return fire and kill the shooter.
there was also some jerk-off on a mini-bike firing off a 9mm at 12th and Decatur [maybe it was delafield] last night. MPD was out picking up casings and looking for a victim. Not sure if anyone was hit. Oh and a stolen car crashed, ejecting and killing the driver somewhere else in 4d. Good times… Good times.”

Duccini’s is located at 1778 U St, NW. I’m always on the hunt for good pizza and we’ve certainly discussed the topic at length. But I think it’s worth exploring good slices of pizza. I enjoy Moronis and Red Rocks etc. But sometimes I’m just looking for a slice. I think hands down Vace’s (Cleveland Park) has the best per slice pizza. Pete’s (Columbia Heights) is also good. But I’m wondering if there are other good per slice places. So how’s Duccini’s? Any other recommendations for per slice spots?

The Black Squirrel is expanding it’s space into the basement level at 2427 18th Street, NW.

And across the street, of course we’ve heard the spy lounge space has closed. Walking by last weekend, I saw that the for lease signs in the window now have a “under contract” listing. Anyone know what may be going in there? I’ll be sure to update as I get more info.

Tangier Lounge is located at 2305 18th Street, NW. It seems like a pretty chill place plus they have free wifi and belly dancing. You can see their menu here. Any fans out there?

Charles was prolific this week!
The newly reformulated, traffic-calming, briefly Third World (repaving has begun) corner of 18th and Columbia/Adams Mill is soon to be graced with one of three large pieces of new sculpture and, possibly, and enhanced kiosk. Sadly, the survey is closed and our opinions mean nothing any more, but you can find more info about designs at:

All modern art has the potential to be silly, but even sillier is the claptrap artists put in their proposals:
“The sculpture’s composition, like the neighborhood, is diverse, creating a local and international feeling while embracing past and present neighborhood cultures.”
“…captures the heart and soul of the people of Adams Morgan by embracing the full diversity and rich history of Adams Morgan residents and architecture.”

“The “Adamor Circle” proposal emanates from one circle, a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. It is separated into many circles or hoops…. This work reflects the diverse and rich community history of Adams Morgan and can be used as a tool and a reminder to the community of the power that people posses to work together in concert as do the divergent elements of the sculpture…”
Guess they used the word “diversity” in the RFP. Call me a lightweight but I think they should just pick out a great piece of sculpture and worry about what it “captures” later on. I saw a sign in a gallery once that said “good art does not match your couch.” It might not “match” your neighborhood, either, but as long as it’s good…
So, which one are you rooting for? I hate to admit it, but I like the boring modern one most, perhaps because I, too have a center which is everywhere and a circumference which is nowhere. But the sunflowers are cool, too. I think the goofy bike will get old quick.
Ed. Note: GGW also took a look at these proposals. As for the sculptures, I hate to admit it but I kinda like the bike one!

Pollo Granjero is located at 1742 Columbia Rd, NW. I’ve often wondered about this place which seems to be a bit more on the fast food side but often crowded. How’s the Pollo?

From Joel of Qualia Coffee:
“I am trying to find out whether anyone in the neighborhood knows anything about a stray dog I found wandering up 5th St. this morning. I’m attaching a photo. I can be reached at the shop any time today. 202-248-6423”
From DC Alert:
“MPD is reporting a Water Main Break at 17th & Florida Ave NW. It is unknown if any customers affected.” I hear 18th Street has been closed. Did this destroy your commute?
From a reader:
“Oprah is giving out free kfc coupons for a free lunch. Coupon is only good to print till 11 or so today but its good to redeem until the 19th. I like that its not valid on mothers day, like hey cheap-o’s you can’t do your mother like that. Take her out to a real place and get her a steak…”

“Dear PoP,
Sometime last week road crews tore up 18th & Columbia, screwing up traffic and making things a giant pain in the ass for everyone in the area. Friday afternoon they packed up and split, leaving the intersection a nasty, gravelly mess.
I don’t know which talented public works official oversaw this brilliant plan, but it’s pretty ridiculous that they’d leave the place looking like a third-world slum all weekend without even pretending to work on it. Maybe they should have hired the guys remodeling the building next to mine, they definitely don’t have a problem working on Saturday mornings.”
Does anyone know the time frame for this project?

This condo is located at 1806 Belmont Road, NW:
The flier says:
“Charming spacious 2 br 1 ba in rare 5 unit brownstone. Picture window bay overlooking 18th & Belmont. Hardwood floors, updated marble bath, Kit with granite and stainless steel. Fireplace, recessed lighting, washer dryer, and 400 sq ft deck.”
More info and photos found here.
This one sounds and looks pretty sweet. Does $445,000 sound reasonable?
