“Dear PoP,

I just was at the Harris Teeter on Kalorama and it seems some movie is being filmed. There are forklifts with spotlights on the top floor and equipment all around. Any idea what is going on?”

I’ve been getting lots of inquiries similar to the one above and it seems that, according to a few readers, some sort of filming involving Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is taking place. One reader is fairly certain that that is his car below.

Perhaps it is a new Capital One commercial? Anyone know more details of what’s being filmed at the Harris Teeter at 1631 Kalorama Rd NW?

UPDATE: Ovechkin was definitely filming there. And it turns out it was a Reebok commercial. And it turns out, he is super nice.

“Dear PoP,

17th and Kalorama NW – he was filming upstairs at the old roller rink and shooting pics in the empty retail space below last night. that is his tricked out white mercedes which he came in with his dad.”

and

“Dear PoP,

Yeah he was there and emerged from the rented space below the HT (used to be roller skating rink) around 8:40 last. He had been filming and doing photoshoots for Reebok ads for a few hours. He was nice and signed autographs for me and my wife.”

From a press release:

Video artist Alberto Roblest brings his latest public art project to the heart of Adams Morgan for two nights only November 5 + 6, 2010. “Present Interval/Intervalo del Tiempo” is a temporary video installation that will transform the alleyway at the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road NW into a museum experience without the museum or even a roof. It will, in fact, be a cultural experience that you can stroll through under a starry sky.

“Present Interval” is part of the “Circling the Issue” series of public art projects that reflect on the inner lives we lead while going about our daily routines. Using video projectors, Roblest will broadcast his signature form of videoart (a subgenre know as videopoetry) onto buildings in the alley behind SunTrust Bank’s Adams Morgan branch. Images will pan left and right across the curved back wall of the bank building using a motorized mirror system custom-built by the project’s technicaladvisor Joseph Kinnard. Additional projectors will throw moving images against other walls in the alleyway, transforming this much-traversed public space with a kaleidoscope of images and sound.

WHERE: Adams Morgan – The SunTrust Bank alley
intersection of 18th Street + Columbia Road NW

WHEN: Fri. + Sat., Nov. 5 + 6, AFTER DARK!

“Dear PoP,

Hey, what’s up with the club that takes over the Stroga yoga studio on weekend nights? I keep seeing huge lines for it here in Adams [Morgan].”

Stroga gym is located at 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW. Their Web site says:

“The building has a rich and romantic history, and with its fine woodwork, imported stained glass and intricate moldings STROGA is sure to take your breath away. It’s the perfect location to hold your special event!

The space is available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate meetings, luncheons, and dinners, fundraisers, dances, private parties, and much more.”

So perhaps it is for different events every weekend? Anyone know if there is a regular nightclub that takes over the Stroga space on weekends?

I’ve been curious to learn what will become of the space, that most recently was a bodega and sold frozen yogurt, at 1813 Columbia Rd, NW. It closed almost exactly a year ago in Oct. ’09. A recent alcohol application permit recently went up saying:

“Restaurant with recorded music and entertainment limited to DJ with no dancing. Seating capacity is 113. Total Occupancy load is 124. Sidewalk Café with seating for 24.”

I’ll be sure to update when more info becomes available about the restaurant.

I’ve been getting a number of emails from readers about the sign that has gone up at the old Oya’s Mini Bazaar and African Art space located at 2420 18th St NW. This is the space that I learned will become:

‘a “Tryst” type spot (coffee house, sandwiches, etc…) with low sofas and lots of gathering space. The new owners have already purchased a liquor license. There wasn’t a kitchen previously so they will have to build out a whole new kitchen and remodel the inside so it is likely going to take a number of months before they open up.’

Thanks to all who sent emails.

The flier says:

“This wonderful one bedroom cooperative is located a stone’s throw from the heart of Adams Morgan on one of the quietest streets in the neighborhood. The well-run building sits in front of Pierce Park where you can use a fenced dog park, take a stroll, sit in the sun, or play sports. A quick walk through the park will also take you to Woodley Park metro. The home features a newly renovated kitchen and bathroom. The beautiful kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops for cooking and entertaining. The building itself offers an enormous roof deck with patio furniture, tons of plants and small trees, and a 360 degree view of the city perfect for enjoying evening meals or the company of friends. Extra storage comes with the unit and is located in the basement along with laundry facilities.”

You can find more info and photos here.

It’s not too often we look at coops so I’m interested to hear what folks of this owner request. Does $315,000 (monthly fee – $370 includes heat, water, and real estate taxes) sound reasonable for this 1 bedroom?

The Craigslist ad says:

“*Large units in the heart of Adams Morgan
*Walk to shopping and dining
*On-site laundry facilities
*Elevator building”

Anyone familiar with The Calverton building? (The title says 1 bedroom but the text says efficiency so I’m thinking this is likely an efficiency.) Does $1205 plus utilities sound reasonable?
