I just noticed that Color Me Mine closed up at 2439 18th St NW. Their Web site says:

“Color Me Mine closed its doors on Saturday, August 8th. We thank you for sharing so many memories with us!

Thank you again for supporting Color Me Mine! You can continue to paint your own pottery in Silver Spring, located at 823 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. For more information, please visit www.silverspring.colormemine.com/.”

And another salon is coming to 3114 Mt. Pleasant St, NW.

Despite all the awesome crafts at crafty bastards my favorite part is always the breakdancing. It didn’t disappoint this year either. Anyone else catch the breakdancing? I can’t believe how crowded the festival has gotten. Do you think they need to expand next year or is the size right?

Saki is located at 2477 18th St, NW. I noticed the sign (above) announcing the expanded menu and realized that we’ve never discussed them before. I guess I always thought they were more of a lounge than a restaurant. But some yelp reviews say the sushi is really good. Any fans of Saki as a restaurant spot?

Twitter was a buzz this morning with word that Amsterdam Falafel, located at 2425 18th Street NW, was looking to franchise. TopShelfWBJ’s Missy Frederick was first to break the news. Amersterdam Falafel gives the following reasons to open a franchise:

* Flagship in Washington DC has received wide acclaim from the press and customers
* Simple menu reduces operational complexity found in other burger and Tex-Mex competitors
* Low cost of goods from chickpeas as the main ingredient (not expensive chicken or beef, and not subject to the commodity price fluctuations)
* Very affordable menu pricing (particularly beneficial in today’s economic climate)
* Appeal of falafel sandwich is becoming universal, driven by the influx of tourists from Europe and the Middle East, not to mention the many U.S. servicemen and women who became big fans of falafel during their tours
* Offering reflects customers’ growing demand for healthy eating

If you want to open one up, you can learn how here.

We discussed best falafel in the city here.

Back in March we learned that Oya’s Mini Bazaar and African Art located at 2420 18th St NW had moved to 2600 block of Connecticut Ave, NW. A reader recently spotted a DCRA sign for demo under the name of “Bistro 18”. I was able to learn that the space is going to become a “Tryst” type spot (coffee house, sandwiches, etc…) with low sofas and lots of gathering space. The new owners have already purchased a liquor license. There wasn’t a kitchen previously so they will have to build out a whole new kitchen and remodel the inside so it is likely going to take a number of months before they open up. I’ll be sure to update as progress is made.

Do you think 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan has room for another Tryst type spot?
