Dear PoP – Nightclub at Stroga on Weekends?

by Prince Of Petworth November 2, 2010 at 11:30 am 28 Comments

“Dear PoP,

Hey, what’s up with the club that takes over the Stroga yoga studio on weekend nights? I keep seeing huge lines for it here in Adams [Morgan].”

Stroga gym is located at 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW. Their Web site says:

“The building has a rich and romantic history, and with its fine woodwork, imported stained glass and intricate moldings STROGA is sure to take your breath away. It’s the perfect location to hold your special event!

The space is available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate meetings, luncheons, and dinners, fundraisers, dances, private parties, and much more.”

So perhaps it is for different events every weekend? Anyone know if there is a regular nightclub that takes over the Stroga space on weekends?

    What the heck is Adams?

I’ve been to events there. They rent it out like you would a hotel ball room.

  • another guy named chris

I have heard it called the Grey Goose Mansion, pretty nice place.

Now Yoga Studios need liquor licenses. Where does the madness end?

    • Boozy

They need liquor licenses if they are going to host parties until all hours every freaking weekend that serve alcohol.

I live next door and it’s fucking annoying. Yes, Adams Morgan is a loud place, but my street was very quiet and residential until Stroga moved in. This past weekend was particularly loud, so I’m less forgiving than I normally would be.

It’s called the Grey Goose Mansion, its mostly invite only and it has been pretty popular as of late…however, there were a lot of problems that occured during this last Friday with Howard Homecoming. Not sure what is going to continue with the Mansion or how they are going to make changes.

I heard there was a 20-person fight going on outside last weekend during one of the late night parties.

Do they need a permit to be an event space and put out a velvet rope?

    • KJ

Last I heard, the legality of their setup was being called into question and they’re probably done for.

  • Luke

I live right across the alley… so I am especially happy that they decided to “diversify” their business. The website for the Grey Goose Mansion is up here: http://www.greygoosemansion.com/

They are not simply renting out the space, they are transforming it into a club. It would be one thing if they were able to pull this off as well as a real bar, but it is a noisy, hot mess that goes til 3am every Friday.

Last weekend they took it a step further and turned the space into a concert venue, with tickets onsale online and everything: http://www.wantickets.com/EventDetail.aspx?e_id=135901

Thankfully I was up at 3am and last Friday and got to see a pretty epic girl fight. They had the valet parking going and completely blocking Calvert, which lead to honking and eventually someone getting pulled out of a car. I got a few photos of the tail end of the fight:

“but it is a noisy, hot mess that goes til 3am every Friday.”

Seriously, how does this differ from any other club on that block? I remember when there would be epic fights in front of Tom Tom at 4 in the morning every weekend. It’s called Adams Morgan.

Definitely agree, and I love living here. I am cool with cleaning up the jumbo slice boxes every weekend. For the most part though, all of the really crazy stuff stayed south of Columbia road. If you moved next to a bar that sort of goes with the territory. In this case, the building next door just turned into a club without any chance for neighbors to weigh in.

The other difference is that all of those establishments have permanent liquor license which means there is not a lot of recourse to get things improved.

I love that you’re eating Jumbo Slice in your avatar. Only something a proud Adams Morganer would admit to doing. :)

What other clubs “on that block?” Stroga is above the FedEx, on the north side of Columbia. There are no other clubs on that block.

Agreed with Luke, this is a part-time club that moved onto an otherwise (relatively) quiet block without any notice to the neighbors.

Ah those fight picks…you have to love Adams Morgan on the weekend… what a S#it hole.

After living there for years I’ve learned that the dumber you are the louder you are!

Also learned that anything even vaguely associated with Grey Goose = crime.

  • Polytasker

Wait, so which is it? Stroga’s event venue, or the Grey Goose club? The Stroga website makes it sound like they just rent out their studio for small single-evening private events, Longview-style. Running a club out of the place is quite a different animal and requires different permits, insurance coverage, and the like.

As a local event planner this smells really fishy to me.

I heard that they just rent the space and when asked about the club the guy on the phone said that Stroga just rents the space and that Stroga leaves it up to the tenant to provide all licenses etc… Stroga just wants to make sure everyone is insured and bonded but that I could use any person I want. So, I’d assume that Storga didn’t know what they were getting into prior to the event… being an event’s facility they sounded very naive… But, I do love their Yoga!

It’s Adams Morgan folks…if you want the peace and quiet, move to Reston. We are a major, metropolitan city and we need some areas of town where clubs and nightlife exist. Don’t make every neighborhood into Tenleytown! Move!

Do we also need people who punch out cab drivers, vandalize store windows, and pee all over trees? I’m lucky enough to live on a quiet side street in the neighborhood and I promptly vacate my digs during weekend nights, but I can’t blame folks who are sick of the high concentration of yahoos who invade the area and make an otherwise decent neighborhood to live douche central. Does all nightlife have to constitute bars and clubs?

    • Victim of one too many DC cabbies

Actually, I think we could benefit from a few more people that punch out cab drivers. :D

  • wil

can you imagine doing yoga in there the next morning! The wan smell of spilled beer and vodka, the tackiness of leftover boozy mop water all over the floor, the heady remnants of thick vanilla perfume and knock-off Drakar Noir.

They better light a lot of patchouli oil for Surya Namaskara the next day =D

    • Anonymous

Hah, my thought too. Though anyone that goes to a place with a silly name like STROGA probably doesn’t care.

  • Anonymous

Complaints about noise aside, I think it’s cool that a commercial space is being used for different purposes depending on what time of day it is. It’s very green. Better than the yoga studio stitting empty at night, or the club during the day.

  • Emmy

When Stroga got their license, did they say they were going to be an event space? If people had known that they were going to be regularly holding parties there, would they have gotten the approval to operate?

Also the Grey Goose Mansion seems really well furnished and pretty permanent, according to their photos. What do they do with all that stuff during they daytime? Is that why Stroga’s cancelling their daytime yoga classes on the weekends?

    M.

  • Ron

All you have to do is piss off the wrong people and the liquor license will be challenged.

    • Cindy

But they don’t have a liquor license.

  • Anonymous

What was in that space before Stroga? I’m surprised it was never chopped up into apartments.
