Thanks to all who wrote in late last night/early this morning. This follows a suspected meth lab fire in Dupont that happened in early Feb. 2012. Last night IAFF36 tweeted around 10:15pm:

“Firefighters responding 1825 summit place Nw to assist MPD with a possible illicit drug lab investigation”

One reader writes:

“Seems like there’s some sort of meth lab bust at my apartment building – 1825 Summit Place NW. Outside of my window there are tons of firetrucks, blocking Clydesdale and in the Park East parking lot along with cop cars. Eventful Wednesday around here though.”

Another reader writes:

“Not sure if you’ve heard about the meth lab bust last night in Adams Morgan. I live in that building and it was pretty scary. I’ve attached a photo (above) I took from my 7th floor apartment while it was going down. The worst part about it was I saw them whisk a really small baby in a carrier out of the building before they brought the guy out in handcuffs. Apparently they found a 6 month old baby in the apartment! It also looked like a woman (the mother?) was also arrested. The cops and DEA were still swarming the building this morning when I left for work.”

Urban Investment Partners (UIP) in partnership with Infinity Real Estate (IRE) of New York City has acquired a 114-unit apartment building at 1841 Columbia Road, NW in Washington, DC, formerly known as The Alcazar, for $26 million. The seller was Fairfield Residential Company. Arbor Commercial Mortgage of New York provided the acquisition and project debt financing for the venture.

1841 Columbia Road is a prominent pre-war mixed-use building conveniently located in the heart of Adams Morgan. The property features 20,000 square feet of prime neighborhood retail space. The partners plan to invest more than $7 million on a comprehensive building renovation and modernization program to include a complete window and retail storefront replacement, a new environmentally friendly water-sourced heating and cooling system, redesigned common areas, and a rooftop terrace certain to be one of the largest and most exciting resident amenities in the District.

Capitol Hemp first opened in Apr. 2008 at 1802 Adams Mill Road, NW in Adams Morgan. They opened their 2nd location in Apr. 2010 at 519 H Street, NW in Chinatown. In Oct. 2011 their stores were raided by MPD.

Yesterday store co-owner Adam Eidinger released a lengthy press release:

“Capitol Hemp, DC’s only source for high quality hemp clothing and accessories, should be celebrating its four-year anniversary since opening its doors on April 20, 2008. Instead, the company, which employs ten people, begins the arduous task of permanently closing down its Adams Morgan (1802 Adams Mill Rd, NW) and Chinatown (519 H St, NW) stores on August 1, 2012.”

Continues after the jump. (more…)

In June 2011 MiG Bar opened above Rendezvous Lounge at 2226 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan. I had been hearing rumblings that they’ll be closing in their current space and I just received a confirmation this morning:

Ahoy, friends. We will be closing our doors April 30th at our current location with aspirations of reopening elsewhere by the latter part of the year. Thanks to all for what has been nothing short of a maelstrom of support, and we encourage you with due zeal to swing on through and get soaked with us before we dangle.

As for right now, Mr. MiG’s feeling particularly trigger-happy so pop in tonight (Tuesday) for $4 Moscow Mules and $3 cans of “quantity beer” from 6pm ‘til close (or until someone tosses a cat in the moon jump)… Until then, compadres.

Stay tuned for word on their new location.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks trying to navigate 18th and Harvard St, NW. Thanks to a reader for sending the photo. They write:

“First the great tractor trailer crash last week, now this! My intersection sure is busy this week.”

Another reader writes:

“Also, looks to be a couple (of sorts, a guy and girl). The girl has just been cuffed.”

McNasty’s opened up back in Dec. 2011 at 2450 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan. One of the owners has posted a photo of him and his son out front of the original Filthy McNasty’s in Scotland.

And below is the explanation. Do you find the name less objectionable now? I’ll be honest I didn’t like the name at first and upon reading the explanation I still don’t like it – primarily because of the ridiculous logo. Do you think it was a good idea for the owner to post an explanation out front? Or does that fall under the: “If you have to explain it…”?

Thanks to all the readers who wrote in and sent photos from last night’s crazy scene at 18th and Harvard St, NW. It happened around 9pm last evening. One reader writes:

“Apparently pedestrians attempted to prevent the truck driver from making this turn to no avail. not sure how clear it is but he has smashed the bricks encasing the lawn and stairs and knocked over the street sign and the stop sign. the many police on the scene seem unsure how to dislodge it.”

Another reader writes at 10pm:

“Came home tonight to find this truck took out a lamp post and stop sign and slammed into the side of building on the corner. Also side swiped three cars.
Looks like everyone is okay, but it’s still there….”

Update – A reader sends a shot of the scene this morning:

Back in Jan. 2012 Southern Hospitality opened in the former Adams Mill Bar and Grill space at 1813 Adams Mill Rd, NW. Their Website says:

Our restaurant consists of two levels and a spacious outdoor patio. Over the past few years Washington DC has become a thriving food scene, providing a wide variety of culinary indulgences. In an effort to continue the expansion of this city’s cuisine selection, we have decided to bring more of the south to the north; with exceptional service, and a menu providing a touch of that warm southern flavor. As a compliment to our food menu, we are bringing a well rounded reserve and by the glass wine list, timeless cocktails along with a few of our own inventions, and a relevant array of draft and bottle beers.

You can see their menus here.

Any fans?

1781 Florida Ave NW

Back in Jan. 2012 a reader noticed that the Rita’s in Adams Morgan had closed underneath Mint at 1781 Florida Ave NW.

I’m happy to report that the folks behind Pleasant Pops have signed a lease on the space and will be opening this summer. They have a kickstarter page and are hoping to raise $20,000 to get the Market and Cafe open by this summer. They explain:

“What is the Farmhouse Market & Cafe?

Inspired by DC area farmers’ markets, our vision is to create a year-round community market and gathering place in the heart of Northwest DC. We’ll feature a selection of seasonal local produce, dairy, farm goods, sandwiches, locally roasted coffees, and our original pop creations.”

Phenomenal news!
