california

“Dear PoPville,

There’s a whiteish skinned man with freckles on 18th Street near California almost every day that I walk by to work around 10am. He loiters in that area wearing a white cap (looks religious), big black coat and backpack, carrying a large trashbag in each hand.

He tries to spit on me, at least in my direction, every time I walk by. When I try to cross the steet before reaching him, if he spots me, he actually will pursue and cross the street as well.

I really don’t know what to do. Is spitting harassment worth calling cops? I noticed he doesn’t spit on men, and I have never seen other women around to know if he spits on other women or not. I’m female in my early thirties. What can I do?”

1762
1762 Columbia Road, NW

Pros and cons, pros and cons but…from a press release:

“Urban Investment Partners (UIP) has acquired 1752 and 1762 Columbia, two mixed-use retail/office properties located in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC for a total of $3.2 million. Greysteel, a national commercial real estate investment services firm, arranged the sale and represented the sellers. The new ownership plans to continue operating the properties as mixed-use retail and office space.

This transaction was arranged by Greysteel President & CEO, Ari Firoozabadi; Senior Director, W. Kyle Tangney; Director, Rawles M. Wilcox; and Investment Associate, Herbert Schwat; who are all based in the Greysteel’s Washington, D.C. office.

1752 and 1762 Columbia, both built in 1907, are four-story, four-unit mixed-use properties with off-street parking and street frontage just off one of the most well-established, visited and iconic commercial corridors in the District, Adams Morgan’s Columbia Road. (more…)

high dive
2337 18th Street, NW

Update from a High Dive event (posted in the comments):

“The High Dive is closing up, and this is the last weekend! [February 18 – February 19] Come say bye to the bar and to Liz!

It’ll be cash only, open bar, don’t have anything to do the next day!”

A reader reports:

“I walked by it on Friday Night around 10PM and it was closed. All Bars should be open on a Friday night. I think it’s done. I went in there like a month ago and it was dead on a Saturday night.”

Another reader hears they are: “looking to sell the place.”

The High Dive opened in the former Pharmacy Bar, RIP, space back in March 2015.

Their Facebook hasn’t been updates since January 13th. Their website says:

“It’s like your favorite house party with better paint and a clean bathroom. Cheap drinks, cheap food, cheap shots from the bartender. Street Fighter 2 (champion edition!), board games, bills-only jukebox (no touch tunes), & chalk in the bathroom.

Selling food through last call, every night.

SUN-THURS: 5PM – 2AM
FRI & SAT: 5PM – 3AM”

I emailed the bar manager a few days ago but still haven’t heard back yet. Updates if/when more is known.
