Ed. Note: Ms. Keesha was nominated for ‘Our Crossing Guard is the Best’ back in 2018.

“Dear PoPville,

It is very sad that Ms. Keesha has passed away. I thought I’d pass this along to you.

A message from Garrison ES

Good afternoon Garrison family,

I am sorry to share that our beloved longtime DDOT crossing guard, Ms. Keesha Marshall, passed away early this morning following a battle with cancer. Ms. Keesha was a unique spirit who welcomed every Wildcat to school with unbridled enthusiasm. She loved our school family and children more than words can say, and will be dearly missed. As we learn more about how we can support her family and celebrate her life, we will share that.”

If you have a photo of a neat find from your house or place of work please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.com thanks. Please let me know where/what neighborhood you found it in too. Thanks.

Thanks to Erin for sharing this absolute awesomeness: “a DC address book from 1896 that my mom had found.

The book has old advertisements and addresses of the “elite residents of Washington” and lists “receiving days” for some homes when visitors were preferred. In the back of the book it lists the names of various club’s members (i.e Cosmos Club members when it was a gentleman’s club, etc).” (more…)

Photos and words by @Pharipedia. Phari is one of my favorite photographers who contributes to our Instagram. He’s volunteered to share a bit more with us from his adventures around town. Phari lives on Capitol Hill.

Since its construction in 1860, this late Victorian-style building in Penn Quarter has been home to St. Marc Hotel, Central National Bank, Apex liquor store, Sears, and the headquarters for National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) since 1995. NCNW was founded in 1935 by the great educator, stateswoman, and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune “to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities.”
