Thanks to Phil for sending this important breaking egg news update:

“On New Year’s Day, I went to Capitol Hill Safeway and they had ZERO eggs. This morning, Aldi has tons of eggs (look closely). And reasonably priced.”

I am reminded of some words that got me through the great paper towel/tissue shortages of 2020/2021: (more…)

Yesterday we shared the shocking egg news from Whole Foods. Sadly, we appear to have uncovered only the tip of the iceberg in what some are already calling Eggmagedeon.

Thanks to Noa for sending the situation from the 14th Street Trader Joe’s:

Only one type of egg left at 14th street Trader Joe’s. Yesterday, 5:31 PM”

I am again reminded of some words that got me through the great chicken breast and tylenol/advil shortages of 2020/2021: (more…)

3178 Mount Pleasant Street, NW

On November 26th we noted that things were not looking good for BestWorld staying open. A few new details have trickled in since then. First WaPo’s Aaron Wiener posted:

“BestWorld supermarket was set to be evicted this Wednesday for nonpayment of rent.

BUT a judge just remanded the case back to the magistrate judge, so the case is ongoing and BestWorld is NOT facing eviction Wednesday.

The court previously ordered BestWorld to pay $1.175 million to its landlord or be evicted.

BestWorld’s lawyer argued that the figure was too high, citing a disagreement over the lease terms.”

A reader sends in a fundraiser and notes:

“Good to hear, but it still looks like the handwriting is on the wall.”

The Fundraiser says:

“On Nov 23rd, BestWorld owners sadly let employees know they would be closing their doors on December 11th after a 27% rent increase from the landlords. With little notice, these 8 community members will be out of a job, after many have worked for BestWorld for more than a decade. (more…)

5300 South Dakota Ave, NE

“Dear PoPville,

Now open in Northeast DC on South Dakota Avenue in walking distance to the Fort Totten DC Metro Station, Aldi is a much needed addition to the neighborhood. Fresh fruits + veggies, discounted staples and frozen foods, plus the Aldi quirks (yep the aisle of “what’s that doing here – I’m buying it!” And those $0.25 cent shopping cart dispensers) are all here and present. “Dear PoPville,

New WFM coming per WSJ report:

“The grocer, which operates more than 500 locations nationwide, has four more Daily Shop stores in New York City and will bring the format to Washington, D.C., in mid-2025, a spokesperson said.”

That seems pretty soon! No idea where — has anyone heard anything?”

Any guesses on what neighborhood? STAY TUNED.
