“not sure exactly what is going on but the Harris Teeter is closed for health code violations. Considering I eat there for lunch 85% of the time, I was understandably very surprised and a little grossed out”
Earlier @jwetz also tweeted us:
“NoMa Harris Teeter has been closed for food code violations. Might need alt plans for groceries tonight”
“The world-renowned Howard University Gospel Choir returns to Safeway’s new Petworth location [3830 Georgia Ave, NW] this Friday evening, December 5, at 6:00 pm – fresh from their appearance at the grocer’s Feast of Sharing last week.
Founded in 1968 on the campus of Howard University and based out of the historic Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, the Howard Gospel Choir emerged as the first college gospel choir on any collegiate campus in the nation. The award-winning ensemble travels extensively throughout the United States and has most recently headlined tours to the European countries of Denmark, Italy, Montenegro, Slovakia and Sweden.
Alumni of the Howard Gospel Choir include Grammy Award winner Richard Smallwood and Elberta “Twinkie” Clark of the legendary Clark Sisters gospel group. The choir is currently under the direction of Reginald Golden, a Howard University alumnus from Cleveland, Ohio.
The Petworth store opened on June 27 featuring a performance by the Urban Nation Youth Hip Hop Choir hours after the doors opened and has hosted a myriad of other events and activities that have included a community health fair, a back-to-school education fair, Pumpkin decorating for kids, and regular jazz performances from local musicians.”
Lots of new grocery stores popping up recently – first Navy Yard’s new Harris Teeter, then Cathedral Heights’ Giant and now Ivy City’s MOM’s Organic Market. There hours are 9a-9p Mon-Sat, and 9a-8p on Sunday. A peek inside 1501 New York Avenue, NE courtesy of MOM’s:
First I have to say – I love that they kept the old 1950s neon sign – awesome! Other memorable element of the store is that it has a ton of self check out stations – good beer and wine selection, they’ll steam lobsters for you, there’s a full service bank, a big starbucks cafe with awesome old map mural – but for me – it’s all about the sign.
Also if you live nearby and happen to see the ribbon cutting at 6pm tonight – they’ll let you in to shop afterwards. Regular store hours are 6am – midnight.
Have a look inside the new 58,000 square foot store after the jump. (more…)
Navy Yard’s big week continues with Harris Teeter opening.
From a press release:
“Harris Teeter grocery store in The Yards will open its doors to the public on November 5th, 2014 at 401 M Street, SE as the first full-service grocery store in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.
Harris Teeter joins an impressive amount of retail that has opened over the past year in the Capitol Riverfront. A total of 9 restaurants – including Osteria Morini, Bluejacket Brewery, Ice Cream Jubilee, and TaKorean – have opened within the past 12 months, and another 3 restaurants are expected to open by the end of 2014. There are currently 23 restaurants open in the Capitol Riverfront that represent a healthy mix of independent, local, and national retailers.
The past 12 months have also brought a total of 7 retail openings in the Capitol Riverfront, including VIDA Fitness with its affiliates Bang Salon and Aura Spa, and Unleashed by Petco. The new mix of retail in the Capitol Riverfront makes this neighborhood a place where people can live, work, play, and shop.”
Tough times continue for Murry’s – first H Street, NE and now Georgia Ave. Thanks to a reader for the tip:
“Just a heads up, Murry’s has closed on GA Ave in Park View. I won’t miss it!”
According to Urban Turf last plans were for 100 unit rental building with ground floor retail. Updates as construction progresses and more details are known.
“Chef Erik Bruner-Yang introduces a new local grocery, Honeycomb, located at Union Market in Washington, DC. Honeycomb’s offerings include locally sourced produce, homemade sauces and ferments such as nuoc cham, hoisin, kombucha, and kimchi, plus an array of Asian goodies not limited to snacks, candies, and condiments. Look for the beautiful Honeycomb packaging and sleek wooden storefront, located in the back of the market, to the left of Harvey’s.
Thanks to all who have been sending emails and tweets – one reader writes:
“Uh oh. I went to the “Bestworld” in Mt. Pleasant the other day only to find it closed for health code violations. The sign below was posted on the door. I can’t say I’m too surprised. It’s not unusual to find rotting produce on their shelves, and their meat section smells like low tide. My wife and I have taken to calling it “Worstworld.” Any idea when they might reopen?”
Ed. Note: I had first heard of a closure last week but when I stopped by on Sunday they had already reopened so this seems like a second closure. I’ll update when they reopen but in similar cases it’s usually for a just a few days. We judged Bestworld (formerly Bestway) back in 2010.
