“Dear PoPville,

I’m super frustrated with the whole situation – we have tried to get delivery slots without luck, and we had 2 curbside pickups at nearby Giants canceled. We scheduled a pickup at store way out in the MD ‘burbs, which was not canceled, but they were out of half of the things we ordered, including basics like milk, chicken, and spinach. I put on my mask and physically went to the Petworth Safeway two weeks ago very early on a Saturday morning, but the store was still uncomfortably crowded and it was impossible to stay 6 ft apart. Would love to hear others’ recent experiences.”

Has anyone had success with the Our Streets Supplies Map? Has the consensus for best times to go shopping changed?

“Dear PoPville,

For several years now, I’ve been annoyed by the inability to buy alcohol in grocery stores before 9a when DC law allows it after 7a.

See, say, Section 25-722

In normal times, no big deal, I’d go elsewhere. But in COVID-nation, I try to minimize the times I go out – and minimize the chances of encountering larger groups when I do go out. So, I’ve been grocery shopping around 7-8a on Fridays at the Giant in Columbia Heights. But the Booze Barricade is always up. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert the public that Target in Columbia Heights is not following the city’s guidelines on masks.

I just left there and few customers and even fewer employees were wearing masks. When I questioned the people working the door, they said that it wasn’t Target’s policy to turn away unmasked customers and that if I had a problem, I could shop elsewhere. (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged us the disturbing report from WUSA9:

“Whole Foods employee: 12+ workers at Logan Circle store have coronavirus

The worker says cases have been popping up at the location since mid-March, the store has not been shut down for a deep cleaning and shoppers are not being told.”

Ed. Note: The 14th/U Street Trader Joe’s recently closed, briefly, for a deep cleaning after an employee tested positive. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Despite a huge desire to, I have never been able to sign up for a CSA because I travel extensively for work and the travel is often unpredictable. I know some restaurants have started selling CSA boxes but I was wondering if you or your readers know of any CSAs that are more flexible about membership right now and that have pick up in or delivery to Columbia Heights or nearby?”

Another readers ask:

“Have any produce wholesalers shifted to making home deliveries of fruit and vegetables? The places that normally supply restaurants must have a huge stock right now that they need to get rid of it, and I, for one, would like to get in on that action.”

Ed. Note: In addition to the Goodbar grocery boxhere. Others?

“Dear PoPville,

Last night I got this email from Safeway about 1 person per 150 sq feet. I went to Safeway this morning and there were people counting people entering. When I asked what the limit would be they said that they couldn’t disclose (?) it seems like if you could estimate the store size you could do it though.” (more…)

Thanks to CJ for sending:

New policy at Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom. They aren’t letting anyone in without a face covering of some kind. [Ed. Note: Applies to all Retail Food Sellers.] Also friendly reminder that wearing a mask doesn’t mean you can stand within 6 ft of other people”

Reminder: Trader Joe’s 14th Street will be reopening Friday at noon.
