From Big Bear:

“We’re in the process of investing in Big Bear again, and we’re reaching out to see if people wanted to be involved.

We’re running a few new projects that include: investing in our farmers market, expanding our food supplemental assistance programs, building a new event space in our cellar (next to the wood-oven kitchen), and building the infrastructure for our rooftop garden. (more…)

Ryan Realbuto via GoFundMe

Thanks to Brooke for sharing this super sad news.

The GoFundMe says:

“On Thursday evening January 18, my precious nephew Ryan Realbuto was walking home from a youth gathering at church with two of his friends when he was shot and killed. While they were walking, a car pulled up, the men asked for money, one person got out of the car, and when no one produced any cash, the person shot Ryan. His roommate pressed on his wound and called 911, however Ryan died shortly after at a local hospital. (more…)

Ana via GoFundMe

“Dear PoPville,

Our babysitter/nanny Ana cares for what seems to be half of the kids we know in Capitol Hill. She had a stroke recently, and although she is recovering, her recovery is impacting her ability to work as a nanny. We’d be grateful if you would help spread the word to the broader DC community so that she can get through this recovery period and get back on her feet.”

via GoFundMe

The GoFundMe says:

“Our school community is devastated by the news of the loss of Patricia Harris, a parent at Van Ness Elementary in Washington, DC. She was a mother to three children, ages 14, 8 and 4.

An innocent bystander, her life was needlessly taken in a drive-by shooting on December 21, 2023.

We cannot bring her back. But we can try to wrap our community around these children and their grandmother to do what we can to help in this terrible time. (more…)

Ronih Murat Pacal via GoFundMe

Meagan writes: “another local restaurateur in Petworth and immigrant was murdered [in Takoma Park] this past week. He was one of the owners of La Villa Pizzeria in Petworth.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we reach out to you today to share the tragic news of the untimely passing of our dear friend, Ronih Murat Pacal. On December 5th, Ronih’s life was cut short by senseless violence when he fell victim to a robbery.

“Dear PoPville,

Two brothers were shot and killed at the local restaurant they worked. I’ve chatted with these guys several times over the years they have worked there. The community is heartbroken by these senseless acts of violence.”

From an email:

“Lena puts the magic in Santa’s sleigh!

With 3 toy drop off (gas) stations, she makes sure there are gently loved regalos to go the whole way
By way of Ethiopia 20 years ago, she now makes sure other migrant children have a holiday bright
Toys drop offs and top offs and to all a good night!

Lena, a deep-hearted community leader, distributed food for us out of one of her five gas stations during the pandemic. Now she brings Santa to 3 of her stations to ensure migrant children have gently loved toys. This is not an abstract concept for her. She came here 20 years from Ethiopia as a Black muslim migrant and knows intimately what it is like to live with little. See it all here and find your way to 1 of her stations in the DMV or all 3!

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to make sure you saw that there is a fundraiser happening for the family that lost their home in the explosion that happened in Arlington a few days ago. The family is safe, but they did lose everything (and right before the holidays!)”
